A private loan is a non-federal student aid loan that is made expressly for post secondary educational expenses. We strongly encourage students to pursue the availability of Federal Student Aid as a first option, as terms and conditions of a Federal Student Aid loan may be more favourable. You may then want to consider a private loan once your Direct loan funding has been maximized. You may require a co-signor.
There are a limited number of lenders that will provide private loans to students while attending a school outside of the US. The University of Windsor is not affiliated with any of these lenders, and we strongly encourage you to research the interest rates, terms of repayment etc. Some of the lenders that we are aware of have been listed below. We will certify other alternative loans provided they will lend to a student attending a post-secondary institution outside of the US. Students can borrow up to their cost of attendance minus any other financial aid that they receive.
Your private loan will be released in two equal installments (usually in September for the Fall semester and January for the Winter semester). The funds are sent by cheque to the University of Windsor. When the cheque has been received you will be contacted to come into the office to endorse it. The cheque will then be deposited into your University of Windsor student account and any excess funds will be available for you to request as a refund.
