Visiting Fellows
Anne Dickinson
July 11 - September 16, 2011
Dr. Anne Dickinson works with the e-Learning Unit of Coventry University, UK, helping faculty learn how best to use the University's learning management system, giving guidance in accessibility issues and investigating the use of new information technology (IT) tools for education. She was also involved in training staff in the University's move to a Moodle learning management system.
Anne's academic background is scientific; her first degree is a BSc in Physics and Computer Science, followed by a PhD in the field of electronic and electrical engineering. But things move on quickly; recently Anne saw the computer that she worked with being displayed in a science museum! Anne worked as a Physicist in Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry where she was responsible for the day-to-day running of a CT scanner. While her daughter was growing up, Anne worked at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, a Further Education College, where she created courses and taught IT skills to adults of all ages and abilities. Much of Anne's practical experience, including teaching people who access the computer in alternative ways, arises from her work at the College.
Anne has developed a blog that allows her to share her practical expertise in accessibility issues, in which she includes a variety of display media. She is involved in an international project, funded by Leonardo Transfer of Innovation. The e-TALIA project seeks a greater understanding through transnational cooperation of the specific language and cultural awareness needs as well as of the learning culture of small enterprises in the Hospitality and Leisure sectors. The seven partners in the project are based in six different countries.
Anne lives in the UK Midlands, is married to Brian and they have a daughter, Laura. Anne likes walking and swimming. She also enjoys exploring, both online and offline. She loves snow, mountains, the sea and bubbling earth, none of which is close to the UK Midlands!
Anne is currently developing a student induction guide and associated online course for Moodle and workshops for members of academic staff to learn how to use the Mahara e-portfolio system which will be available at Coventry University in the new academic year.
