Internal Grant Programs

The Office of Research and Innovation offers a number of internal grants designed to support researchers establishing new research programs, undertake knowledge mobilization projects, and address emerging issues on campus.

The UWindsor-SSHRC Explore Grant program provides non-renewable seed funding opportunities for arts, social sciences and humanities researchers to conduct research and other scholarly and artistic activities that aid in strengthening their future external grant applications, particularly to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The maximum funding amount per grant is $5,000. The UWindsor – SSHRC Explore fund is substantially augmented by a special allocation of monies from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The term of appointment for all applicants who hold either a renewable or term appointment must cover the time frame associated with the proposed research. The proposed research must fall within the disciplines of the arts, humanities and social sciences. Priority will be given to applicants within five years of starting their academic appointment.

What projects are eligible?

Eligible projects will support applicants in establishing research programs or initiating new projects that are likely to attract external support. The aim of the Schulich - UWindsor Opportunities for Research Excellence Program (SWORP) is to enrich undergraduate medical education by enabling students from the Windsor program of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (“Schulich-Windsor students”) to conduct research under the supervision of a University of Windsor faculty member. SWORP awards are valued at $5000 and a maximum of 10 awards will be granted in a year.

The program is intended to foster an appreciation for and proficiency with the research process. It will complement other existing programs to foster student research, including Schulich's Summer Research Training Program (SRTP); Schulich Dentistry Research Opportunity Program (SDROP) and student research opportunities within Experiential Learning. Students can expand on a project started through the Research Module of Experiential Learning.  It is hoped that this program will provide an opportunity for students to learn how research is conducted and will encourage medical students to incorporate research activities into their future career plans.

Who can apply?

Principal applicants (supervisors) must hold an appointment at the University of Windsor (adjunct; Clinical Professor and Professor of Practice, tenured, tenure-track, or limited-term), which must cover the term of the proposed research study. Student applicants must be undergraduate medical education students currently enrolled in their 1st or 2nd year within the Windsor Campus of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.Undergraduate medical students based in London, BSc or BMSc students, postgraduate trainees, graduate students in Schulich departments, and other University of Windsor students are not eligible for this program. Supervisors do not need to be in a medical research field.

What projects are eligible?

Students can expand on a project started through the Research Module of Experiential Learning. Past projects have included the disciplines of law, social work, and data organization, and any project that has a medical nature may be eligible. All research activities must take place at institutions within Windsor-Essex. Only one application per supervisor or student can be accepted.

The goal of this program is to provide assistance to researchers who wish to improve their Tri-Council grant application which was judged by the agency to be of high quality but was not funded due to restrictions in the financial resources of the agency.  Following an internal review, the number of awards will be dependent on the availability of the funds and the ranking of the applications by the Adjudicating Committee.  The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI) is responsible for providing the funding. The provision of funding and continuation of this program are contingent upon availability of funds.

Who can apply?

Potential applicants will be contacted by the Office of Research and Integrity Services. Eligibility is determined by scores awarded by the funding agency.

What projects are eligible?

Projects that directly address reviewer comments in order to strenghten applications to future NSERC and SSHRC competitions will be considered, provided applicants are eligible based on the scores awarded to unsuccessful applications.
