Contest winner serves up correct answers

Marla Rivard, a secretary in Food Services, served up all the right answers in winning Monday’s DailyNews trivia contest.

By identifying the fictional settings of a number of Canadian television shows, she earned a prize package studded with UWindsor logos, including a pair of photo frames, pens, a leather luggage tag, a t-shirt, a chef’s apron and boxed chocolates, plus a special quilted bag to carry it all—courtesy of the special events manager in the Office of the President.

Orientation program to give new students a Head Start on university life

More than 1,000 newly-admitted first-year students—and their families—will get their first taste of campus life starting this week, as they attend the Head Start academic orientation program.

The program, organized by the Educational Development Centre, includes information sessions about university life for both students and parents; academic advising; presentations on residence and food services; an information fair highlighting campus services; tours and more.

Days are divided by faculty:

Second Cup station ready to serve

The Marketplace food court’s latest addition opened Tuesday. The Second Cup offers self-serve coffees and other hot beverages.

Dave McEwen, Food Services department head, says he had been working to bring the company to campus since early 2010.

“They have a great line of premium coffee products, all certified by the Rainforest Alliance,” he says. “Second Cup really takes into consideration sustainable business practices.”

Marketplace cafeteria reducing hours

The Marketplace food court in the CAW Student Centre is serving lunch weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Its Pizza Pizza, Subway sandwiches and Bernie’s Grill stations are open during that time, along with the grab-and-go foods.

The Tim Hortons outlet will remain open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. while installation of the Second Cup self-serve counter continues.

“We just weren’t getting any customers outside the core lunch business,” says assistant manager Paolo Vasapolli. “We will have to review our hours once the Second Cup is ready to open.”

Coffee will keep flowing during summer transition

Installation of the new Second Cup station in the Marketplace food court is running a little behind schedule, but campus caffeine fiends take heart – you’ll still be able to get your fix.

The Tim Horton’s outlet in the CAW Student Centre will continue operations until the Second Cup is up and running, says manager Mark Bagley.

“The utility connections are taking longer than we thought, but no worries,” he says. “If it takes an extra day, we’ll keep Tim’s open a day. And if it should take 10, we’ll keep it open for 10 days.”

Fundraising campaign hoping to find fertile soil

This year’s Annual Giving Program will enable employees to make a double gift of sorts, says campaign chair Bruce Tucker.

In line with the campaign theme of Plant a Seed, every donation will be represented by a flower in a planting outside the Leddy Library.

“The garden is being completely redone, and the plant material and labour for the landscaping is donated by Facility Services,” says Dr. Tucker, associate vice-president, academic affairs. “It will make a big contribution to the beautification of the campus.”

Lecture to explore feminism and argumentation

Feminists criticize the extent to which logic and other models for argumentation eliminate important contextual elements and force specific interpretations as if they were neutral, says philosophy professor Catherine Hundleby.

She will explore the subject in a free public lecture entitled "Feminism and Argumentation" on Thursday, September 8, at 3 p.m. in the seminar room of Parker House, 105 Sunset Avenue.
