University issues statement on coronavirus

The University of Windsor continues to monitor issues and concerns associated with novel coronavirus. The University is also working with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit to monitor the local situation.

At this time, the Ministry of Health considers the risk to Ontario residents to be low. Students, staff, or faculty can also consult the Ontario government webpage — www.ontario.ca/coronavirus — for further information on symptoms, prevention, and travel-health advice.

For students with immediate concerns about their health, please make an appointment with Student Health, Counselling and Wellness Services, which is located on the second floor of the CAW Student Centre (519-973-7002), or contact your off-campus physician. Week dedicated to ending the stigma around mental illness

Don’t let the winter blues get you down — a series of events and activities across campus this week will promote mental health, help students overcome stress, and challenge stigma.

Did you know many people with mental illnesses find the stigma worse than their symptoms? During UWindsor’s Revive and Thrive Week, campus-wide participation helps to end stigma with students, faculty and staff joining the conversation about mental health. The week aims to promote mental health literacy through the 5 Simple Ways to End Stigma with a full week of campus-wide events and social media efforts to #ChallengeStigmaUWindsor.

“Together we can create positive change and make UWindsor a place where everyone can thrive,” says Ashley Vodarek, mental health and wellness co-ordinator.

Revive and Thrive Week will encompass everything from free cocoa and cupcakes to yoga and craft sessions, all with messages on learning how to end stigma. Among the week’s highlights are:

  • Lancer football alumnus Frank Renaud, a pro linebacker and mental health advocate, will deliver a free public address at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, in room 140, Human Kinetics Building.
  • The St. Denis Centre will sponsor a “Sit and Sip” drop-in session of free tea and colouring.
  • The Wellness Outreach Office hosts the #ChallengeStigmaUWindsor event, 5 Ways to End Stigma, on Bell Let’s Talk Day, Wednesday in the CAW Student Centre.
  • The CAW Student Centre will offer an escape room on Tuesday and distribute self-care kits Wednesday.
  • Thursday will see a presentation on coping skills hosted by Residence Services and the International Student Centre in the Green Bean Café.

There are more than two dozen activities on offer; find a full schedule on the website of the Wellness Outreach Office.

Questions about the week? Contact the Wellness Outreach Office at wellness@uwindsor.ca or 519-253-3000, ext. 4635.

Registration proceeding for multi-factor authentication

More than 670 UWindsor faculty and staff members have set up their multi-factor authentication (MFA) options so they can continue accessing Blackboard, Office 365, UWinsite Finance, and UWinsite Student when travelling or working from home starting Jan. 30.

“We’re very pleased with MFA registration so far,” says Marcin Pulcer, assistant director for client services in Information Technology Services. “We’d like to give an extra nod of recognition to our 352 colleagues from across campus who set up their authentication options before we started talking about the need to do so.”

If you have not had a chance to set up your authentication options, please do so before the rollout of MFA begins on Jan. 30. Here are the steps:

  1. Navigate to myprofile.microsoft.com in a web browser and sign in with your UWinID@uwindsor.ca and UWin Account password.
  1. In the Security info box, click the UPDATE INFO link.
  1. Click the + Add method button to add an authentication method. Authentication methods include Phone – text or call and Microsoft Authenticator App – verification code or notification.

“Setting up your authentication options before MFA is enabled on your account is easier,” says Pulcer. “IT Services strongly recommends you do so.”

To learn more about MFA, visit www.uwindsor.ca/itservices/multifactor. You can also ask a question or open a UWin Account ticket.
