Piano and woodwinds to take stage in faculty recital

A trio of musicians — pianist Philip Adamson, flutist Liesel Deppe, and oboist Faith Scholfield — will perform French chamber music in a recital Sunday, Jan. 26, in the Performance Hall, SoCA Armouries.

The faculty recital will feature:

  • Sonate pour hautbois et piano by Henri Dutilleux;
  • Sonatine pour flûte et piano by Pierre Sancan;
  • Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano by Madeleine Dring; and
  • Fantaisie concertante pour flûte et hautbois by Jules Demersseman.

“This program includes two better-known works of the 20th century French repertoire and two compositions which ought to be heard more frequently,” says Dr. Adamson. “One of these, it must be confessed, is not French in origin, but it is assuredly French in style and temperament.”

The show will start at 2:30 p.m. Ticket are $20, with a student price of $10, available at the door or online.

Cancer research benefits from casino charity concerts

A new imaging system unveiled Thursday in the Essex Centre of Research (CORe) will enable high-quality analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins collected from cells and tissues — benefiting at least eight cutting-edge cancer research programs at the University of Windsor.

The purchase of the FluorChem-HD2 Imaging System was supported by Caesars Windsor, which contributed $10,000 from its Concerts for a Cure campaign and a further $5,000 annual commitment to local cancer programs.

Dora Cavallo Medved, translational research director for the Windsor Cancer Research Group, said those contributions make a difference.

“We are extremely grateful to Caesars Windsor for recognizing the impact of research equipment and its significance to advancing the field,” she said. “Enhancing the infrastructure available for cancer research is critical for moving discovery forward and for training the next generation of scientists and clinicians.”

Susanne Tomkins, the casino’s public relations manager, said the company is honoured to partner with the group, which unites academic cancer researchers from the University of Windsor with clinical researchers at Windsor Regional Hospital, local oncologists, and other health care professionals working in the field of cancer treatment and care.

“We are a long-time proud supporter of the Windsor Cancer Research Group as they continue to strengthen world-renowned cancer research programs here in our community,” Tomkins said.

Workshops to explore new ways to showcase research and scholarly activity

Leddy Library’s Centre for Digital Scholarship will kick off two workshop series next week to help researchers explore new ways to showcase their research and scholarly activity.

The first series, Creating Digital Exhibits, includes four workshops on how to create unique digital exhibits to showcase scholarly work and research.

“Creating a digital exhibit allows you to curate collections of documents, images, audio, and more for display online, giving you the ability to reach audiences around the world,” said Devon Mordell, digital scholarship and archiving librarian. “We use a wide variety of open-source and free software so that participants can continue to create new projects on their own after the workshop.”

The second series, Visualization for Humanities Data, is made up of five workshops on how to prepare and visualize various types of data used in the Humanities.

“Visualizing data can lead to new insights about the phenomena they describe,” said Mordell. “It also offers a dynamic and engaging way to present your findings.”

Participants can attend all or select workshops. Workshops are free and space is limited. To register or find more information, visit the library website.
