Play to tackle issues of hate-motivated crime

It’s a show that can help educate a city, says Chris Rabideau.

A two-time UWindsor grad, with degrees in education and drama, the director of Interrogation says the play’s production will make history.

Interrogation tells the story of a transgender teenager who has been the victim of a hate crime. Its script draws on the actual experiences of local high school students.

“Victims of crimes shared their stories,” says Rabideau. “Then we cast it with students from all over town.”

More than 5,000 Windsor and Essex County elementary and high school students will attend performances of the play, which is intended to be used as an educational tool and an instrument of change.

“Besides the play, youths from across the region will attend workshops to gain further education on creating positive spaces free from hate crimes and bullying, which they will take back to their schools to share,” Rabideau says.

The workshops are being run by teacher candidates from the Faculty of Education. It’s one of a number of partnerships in the project, which include Windsor Pride, Windsor Police Services, the Greater Essex District County School Board and Family Services Windsor.

“All these different organizations are coming together to make a change,” says Rabideau. “We’re moving forward as a city – Windsor is at the forefront.”

The public is invited to two performances at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts’ Chrysler Theatre, March 6 and 7. Tickets are $5 for students, $12 general admission – $20 including admission to an afterglow party Tuesday. For tickets and more information, contact Windsor Pride at 519-973-4656.

Video a declaration of Lancer pride

Pride for the University of Windsor is alive and well both on campus and with our 100,000 alumni, says George Kalivas.

That’s why the social media coordinator in the Office of Public Affairs and Communications put together a video featuring some students and alumni declaring their UWindsor affiliation, loud and proud.

“We wanted to show all aspects of being a Lancer,” says Kalivas. “It’s not just for varsity athletes. Whether you’re a first-year drama student or the mayor of Windsor, you can be proud of your alma mater.”

One of his subjects, Ishika Towfic, agrees. The fourth-year mechanical engineering student volunteered to participate in the project, saying she considers herself a Lancer, too.

“Our capstone design team is named the Lancers,” she said. “We’ll be wearing our school colours in the SAE Aero competition this April.”

Kalivas says he was very pleased with the reaction as he approached prominent alumni to participate.

“Everybody was so excited to do it,” he says. “It really comes across in the video. The secret is I didn’t tell people how to say their piece – it’s very genuine.”

Watch the video, entitled “I’m a Lancer.”

Seagull knowledge earns theatre tickets for contest winner

Maria Argoselo of conference and accommodation services won yesterday’s DailyNews trivia contest and earned two tickets to see the University Players production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, translated by David French.

Argoselo’s name was drawn from all entrants who correctly identified Richard Bach as the author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, “Laridae” as the seagull family, and The Good Doctor as the Neil Simon play which pays homage to Chekhov.

The University Players production of The Seagull continues Wednesday through Sunday at Essex Hall Theatre. For information or tickets, call 519-253-3000, ext. 2808, or visit www.universityplayers.com.

Medical education to play a role in Windsor’s economic revival: professor

On the eve of the graduation of the first class of physicians from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program, associate dean Gerry Cooper says medical education in Windsor is really on the move.

“Windsor boasts exceptional learning facilities for our medical students and, not surprisingly, they consistently tell us how impressed they are with their learning environments, both at the University of Windsor and within Windsor Regional and Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospitals,” he writes in an opinion piece in Monday’s Windsor Star.

“On the horizon and consistent with our Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's Strategic Plan, we hope to expand our research enterprise at the Windsor Program; there are numerous opportunities for cross-collaborations with other departments within the University of Windsor, our colleagues at local hospitals and other like-minded organizations in the vicinity.”

Electronic form to streamline requests for CTL services

The Centre for Teaching and Learning offers a new electronic tool to simplify the process of requesting its services.

The electronic service order form enables instructors and staff to remotely request CTL services like audio-visual setup for a campus event, photography, studio space, DVD duplication, and video encoding, editing, and recording.  Users will also receive an automated confirmation e-mail to better track their requests.

“Rather than phoning or emailing multiple CTL staff, users can now log in to the system using their UWinID, and fill out a form,” says Darrel Laurendeau, manager of educational technologies. “Besides improving record keeping for us, this will help save time for everyone.  We will continue to maintain and improve our ordering systems as part of our ongoing commitment to quality customer service.”

To access this form, visit the centre’s Web site at http://www.uwindsor.ca/ctl/. Please contact Laurendeau at 519-253-3000, ext. 3054, or e-mail dlaurend@uwindsor.ca with any questions or concerns.
