Hockey face-off set for Windsor Arena on Friday

The men’s hockey team will look to close out the Western Conference title series as it hosts the Western Mustangs Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Windsor Arena. Windsor has a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

A win would send Windsor to compete for the Ontario University Athletics championship, the Queen’s Cup, as well as earn it a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship tournament.

With other Lancer teams on the road for the rest of the playoffs, this will be the only conference finals event Windsor will host this year. Athletics staff invite all Lancer fans for an exciting game!

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors, and can be purchased at the gate starting one hour prior to the game. Windsor Arena is located at 334 Wyandotte Street East.

League honours three Lancer men’s basketball players

Ontario University Athletics named Lancer men’s basketball players Lien Phillip and Josh Collins to its West Division all-star team Thursday, and Rotimi Osuntola Jr. won all-rookie honours.

Phillip, a third-year forward, moved up from last year’s second team to earn his first appearance as a first-team all-star after dominating the glass this season. His 78 offensive and 186 defensive rebounds topped both categories, and his total of 264 boards were 76 more than the closest competitor.

Third-year guard Josh Collins was named to the second team after finishing the year with 298 points and leading the league in assists with 131 and steals with 57.

A first-year forward, Osuntola scored 208 points while blocking 20 shots, fourthbest in the OUA.

Williamson named men’s volleyball all-Canadian

Kyle Williamson, captain of the Lancer men’s volleyball team, was named a second-team all-star by Canadian Interuniversity Sport on Thursday. The fourth-year psychology major is a two-time OUA all-star. He finished the season averaging 3.6 points, 3.08 kills and 1.66 digs per game.

Print-on-demand service puts publishing in reach

English professor Marty Gervais said the University has a “great service” with its new Espresso Book Machine.

“It’s basically a literary vending machine,” he said Wednesday at an event to launch the University Bookstore’s new print-on-demand service.

Operators can produce a paperback book with full-colour cover in about five minutes – printing, collating, gluing and trimming.

Students in Gervais’ editing and publishing practicum course were the first customers, printing test copies of books they will send to a traditional print shop this week: Terry Ann Carter’s Day Moon Rising and Mary Ann Mulhern’s Brides In Black.

Fourth-year English major Jaclyn Wood called it “a proud moment.”

“It’s cool to see it, to see my name on the copyright page,” she said as she leafed through Mulhern’s 80-page work.

The student edited the text, designed a cover and the interior layout using professional design software.

“It was really interesting,” said Wood’s classmate Beth Harrett. “Before when I looked at books, I never considered the fonts or the choice of what typefaces go together. Now I find I’m doing that all the time.”

According to Bookstore marketing manager Martin Deck, the machine’s products are virtually indistinguishable from books printed the traditional way. He believes the services will be useful for authors hoping to self-publish, organizers seeking customized print materials for conferences and events, and readers seeking specialized or out-of-print books.

“We are ready to roll,” he said Wednesday. “We can print more than a million on-demand titles, as well as any new works people have written.”

The store is working with Document Imaging to offer assistance with layout and design, and has prepared a list of production specifications. For details, contact Deck at 519-253-3000, ext. 3726 or e-mail mdeck@uwindsor.ca.

International scholar to offer session on graduate supervising and mentoring, March 16

How can graduate supervisors and mentors adjust their approach in order to communicate more effectively with their students? And what can instructors and supervisors do when an impasse or outright conflict arises?

Tracy C. Davis, professor and associate dean for academic affairs at Northwestern University, will offer a special presentation to faculty and staff on graduate supervising and mentoring, March 16 at 10 a.m.

“Good communication is a key element of any relationship and research mentoring is no exception,” says Davis. “This session will focus on assessing obstacles to students’ success in tandem with what mitigates against our effectiveness as mentors.”

Participants will discuss communication styles and the challenges they present when working with mentees who have contrasting approaches; identify and practice concrete strategies for addressing troubling symptoms and engaging in difficult conversations with mentees; and improve understanding of how difference and cultural awareness affect workplace conduct and students’ ability to conduct research.

The Humanities Research Group presents this workshop, co-hosted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Centre for Teaching and Learning. To register, visit http://cleo.uwindsor.ca/workshops/ctl/2/
