Cello and piano recital to boast Russian flair

Pianist Philip Adamson and cellist Ben Gitter enjoy the energy and complexity of 20th century music. For their recital this weekend, they have chosen an all-Russian program which includes Igor Stravinsky’s Suite italienne, sonatas by Dmitri Kabelevsky and Nikolai Miaskovsky, and two works by Nikolai Kapustin.

The recital is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 30, in Assumption University Chapel.

Jazz concert boasts music faculty and guest performers

The University of Windsor School of Music will open its 44th concert season with a fabulous afternoon of jazz featuring members of the school’s faculty on Sunday, October 23, at 2:30 p.m., in Assumption University Chapel.

Music instructors vocalist Shahida Nurullah, saxophonist Jeffrey Price, trumpeter Robert Fazecash and guitarist Vaughn Klugh will join special guests Tad Weed on piano, Marion Hayden on double bass and Kenneth “Spider Webb” Rice on drums for a concert entitled Afternoon Jazz with Shahida Nurullah & Friends.

Music therapy workshop draws attention in Sudbury

A workshop by fourth-year music therapy student Kylie Klym and professor Amy Clements-Cortes drew television cameras to the Maison Vale Hospice in Sudbury thios week.

Klym is serving a six-month internship at the hospice, providing therapy to its residents and oncology patients at the Regional Cancer Program at Sudbury Regional Hospital.

All-candidates’ meeting to focus on post-secondary education

A coalition of UWindsor students is hosting a forum for candidates in the provincial riding of Windsor West, Wednesday, September 28, at noon in the CAW Student Centre.

The candidates will be asked to address issues related to post-secondary education.

Vajo Stajic, a fourth-year labour studies student, says the October 6 election offers a key opportunity to pressure politicians and demand change.

“Education has become a central issue to several parties’ platforms,” he says. “In Ontario, we’re paying the highest tuition fees in Canada. Enough is enough.”

Concert a celebration of classical Italian music

Members of the UWindsor faculty will join musicians from Italy in a recital entitled Ascolta La Ciociaria on Tuesday, September 27.

Composer Francesco Marino, soprano Eleonora Caliciotti and pianist Giovanni Valle hail from Frosinone, Italy. Alto Catherine McKeever and pianist David Palmer will join them for a program that features Marino’s works as well as favourite art songs and arias by Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, Giacomo Puccini, Giuseppe Verdi and more.
