Music alum to open concert season

UWindsor alumnus Greg Samek (BMus 2006) will open the School of Music’s fall concert season with a marimba performance on Friday, September 14, at Mackenzie Hall.

Samek is an alumnus of the Detroit Civic Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada; he is currently a member of the Scrap Arts Music ensemble, which performed for the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

UWindsor welcomes transfer of downtown campus properties

The transfer of city-owned properties to the University of Windsor will advance planning for the development of its downtown campus, president Alan Wildeman said Monday, after Windsor City Council voted to turn the Armouries, the former bus depot and the Chatham Street parkette over to the University.

The downtown campus expansion plans touches on every goal of the University’s strategic plan, said Dr. Wildeman.

UWindsor vocalist to headline jazz divas concert

Shahida Nurullah, UWindsor jazz voice instructor, headlines a concert on the Michigan grounds of the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House on Friday, August 24.

With the historic house as the backdrop, jazz vocal traditions born from the big-band swing era will be honoured at “Detroit Divas Sing, Sing, Sing,” a concert featuring three legendary vocalists—Nurullah, Ursula Walker and Judy Cochill—and the Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra.

Songs from the American songbook will highlight the unique styles of each artist and bring the region’s powerful music history to life.

Music student’s essay hits the right note in national competition

Teachers in Ontario’s elementary schools are required to teach music, but don’t necessarily have much knowledge of the subject. A UWindsor music student is hoping her research can help them to do a better job.

Jacqueline Kraay’s paper “Examining the Construction of Music Teacher Identity in Generalist Classroom Teachers: An Ethnographic Case Study” took top honours in the Canadian Music Educators’ Association’s 2012 undergraduate essay competition.

UWindsor reveals vision for downtown campus

Preliminary renderings of the University of Windsor’s downtown campus were revealed by president Alan Wildeman during a media conference Wednesday, April 17, in the Windsor Armouries.

“The University of Windsor is creating new spaces where our students, faculty and staff can be engaged in innovative teaching, learning and discovery, and where they can more effectively partner with the arts community and social agencies to make a difference,” Dr. Wildeman said.

Combo to jazz up student recital

Composers ranging from George Gershwin to Count Basie to Wes Montgomery are on the program today, as a student jazz combo performs in recital for the School of Music’s Take 4 series.

Student heroes collect a ton of food for needy

Dozens of residence students hit the streets of Windsor last weekend, collecting 3,400 pounds of non-perishable goods to stock local food banks.

“It’s not acceptable that many people are faced with not knowing where or how they are going to eat each day,” said residence life coordinator Lynn Charron, one of the organizers of the day of action sponsored by the Higher Education Reaching Out (HERO) Project.

“With food banks not being able to keep up with the demand, it’s time that we reached out and gave our neighbours a helping hand.”
