Advice for Supporters of Students Living at Home

If your student is living at home and commuting to school, they are what we call a "commuter student". Supporting a commuter student will comes with unique characteristics. Keep this in mind when you as it may alter dynamics at home.

Allow your student greater freedom. Consider that the schedule at home will probably change and encourage your student to communicate their intentions as they may interfere with dinners and/ or family functions.

Encourage your commuter student to get involved in extra-curricular activities and develop connections to the campus community.

Realize that your student's workload will increase dramatically, and some responsibilities in the home may need to be adjusted.

Understand that commuting to campus can be time-consuming and frustrating for your student.
