April 20, 2014 - 3rd year nursing student Ashley Bulley and her husband's own fertility challenges prompted them to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) five years ago after raising the $17,000 cost through fundraising efforts of friends, family and the community. They are now the parents of twins. This endeavour not only inspired Ashley's nursing career, but also a need to make a difference for those less fortunate. Ashley and her husband began petitioning the government for IVF funding by gaining thousands of signatures, as well as the support of a number of members of parliament. Ashley then co-founded an infertility support group: Conceivable Dreams, the OHIP for IVF coalition. This group held many events and campaigns, lobbied at Queens Park, spoke in front of parliament, and continued to petition.

The patient who nominated Jelena for this award provided the following comments:

"Jelena was a 4th year nursing student who did not seem like a student. She was very confident and capable in all her duties as a nurse. She was extremely thorough and very gentle during my assessments. She truly has both the skills and qualities to be in the nursing profession. She had a very positive and bubbly attitude that made my day. I hope she is able to be employed at Met when she finishes school."

March 25, 2014 - Nursing students raising funds for fellow student battling cancer by selling bracelets

Jessica Girard is a dear friend of ours and a member of our nursing class. She is extremely passionate and warm hearted friend, who makes an impact on every person she meets.

At the age of 20, she was unfortunately diagnosed on December 27th 2012 with a rare form of stage 4 colon cancer (Signet Ring Adenocarcinoma). Shortly after her diagnosis, Jessica learnt that the cancer had spread to reproductive organs. Jessica has spent the majority of the past year and a half in hospitals for multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments.

In January of 2014, Jessica was declared in remission. Three weeks later Jessica received tragic news described by her as a day where her world stopped in its tracks, as she was re-diagnosed with cancer. Since this re-diagnosis Jessica has spent almost everyday in the hospital in and outside of Canada. She is currently traveling back and forth from Windsor to London receiving treatments.
