The Department of Kinesiology, in the Faculty of Human Kinetics, offers a Master of Science (Kinesiology & Health Studies), Master of Sport Management and Leadership, as well as a PhD in Kinesiology.
MSc (Kinesiology and Health Studies)
The Master of Science (Kinesiology and Health Studies) focuses on the application of movement science in sport, physical activity, exercise, health, wellness, and the workplace. Students pursue course work and either thesis research, or an internship experience that examines the basic and applied principles of human biomechanics, ergonomics, motor behavior, sport and exercise psychology, or exercise physiology, health and wellness.
Master of Sport Management & Leadership (MSML)
The Master of Sport Management & Leadership (MSML) prepares students to be effective managers and leaders in sport; to critique social, historical, and cultural influences of and in sport; and to develop innovative solutions to critical problems in today’s multi-faceted sport industry.
The MSML program offers both a thesis and an internship option. The thesis option provides students an opportunity to engages in research on a topic of their interest. The internship option provides students with hands-on work experience to complement their coursework.
According to SportBusiness International’s Postgraduate Sports Course Rankings, our MSML program is the best program of its kind in Canada and among the top in the world.
PhD in Kinesiology
The goal of the PhD program in Kinesiology is to allow students interested in Kinesiology & Health Studies or Sport Management and Leadership to develop excellence in designing, conducting, and disseminating research knowledge to the broader community including the workplace; sport, recreation, and leisure environments; teaching and pedagogy; and exercise, physical activity, and rehabilitation settings.
The PhD program includes a unique community-based internship requirement, designed to complement the program’s focus on community well-being, and provides doctoral students with the opportunity to engage in impactful community-based service.

- A 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Health Studies, or related field
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 70% or better in the final two years of study (full-time equivalent)
- A faculty supervisor
- Two academic letters of reference (e.g., course instructor)
- The MSc(KHS) Supplementary Admissions Form

- Selection criteria will include a weighted score for: (1) undergraduate academic performance (25%); (2) strength of references (25%); and (3) prior training, experience, and accomplishments (50%).
