Please note:
- You must stop working on the day you no longer meet the eligibility requirements below (e.g., if you are no longer a full-time student during an academic session.)
- You can only start working in Canada when your study program has started. You can’t work before you start your studies.
- If your program has an coop/internship component, you cannot use your study permit authorization to work on/off campus to complete your coop/internship. You must apply for a seperate coop work permit.
Working on campus
You may work on UWindsor campus without a work permit if:
- you are a full-time student at the University of Windsor
- you have a valid study permit
- your study permit has the remarks on it that you may accept employment on campus
- you have a valid SIN number
Please check with the HR department at the University of Windsor to confirm the maximum hours students are allowed to work on campus.
Working off campus
International Students may work off-campus if
- you are a full-time student at the University of Windsor
- you have a valid study permit
- you are enrolled in an UWindsor academic or professional program
- your program is at least six month or more in duration and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
- your study permit has the remarks on it that you may accept employment off campus
- you have a valid SIN number
If you meet all the requirements above, you may:
- work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions
- work full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break.
Please note that in order to work off-campus, you must maintain full-time status prior to and subsequent to the scheduled breaks. Scheduled breaks can’t be more than 4 consecutive months or back to back scheduled breaks. Scheduled breaks shall not be more than 5 months during each calendar year.
Limit on off-campus work hours to be lifted temporarily
On October 7, 2022 The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the temporary lifting of the 20-hour-per-week cap on the number of hours that eligible post-secondary students are allowed to work off-campus while class is in session. From November 15, 2022, until December 31, 2023, international students who are in Canada and who have off-campus work authorization on their study permit will not be restricted by the 20-hour-per-week rule. Foreign nationals who have already submitted a study permit application, as of today, will also be able to benefit from this temporary change, provided their application is approved.
