Prescription Safety Eyewear

Procedure to Obtain Prescription Safety Eyewear

  1. Employees interested in obtaining prescription safety glasses can contact the Employee Safety and Wellness office to initiate the request.  Employees must supply the following information: name, employee number, department, and Supervisor.
  2. Employee Safety and Wellness will provide an authorized voucher to employees, per the terms of the applicable Collective Agreement, authorization from the departmental supervisor, or the Employee Safety and Wellness office.
  3. Employees are to make an appointment at one of the participating locations listed on the voucher, and present the voucher along with their current prescription at the appointment.
  4. Employees will receive one pair of approved safety eyeglasses, per the University’s agreement and pricing with the vendor.
  5. Invoices will be submitted to the University, no up-front payment is required by the employee.

Please note:

  • Eye exams are not covered by the University’s prescription safety eyewear program.  The vendor will fill a recent prescription from the employee’s regular optometrist.
  • If an employee requires an eye exam in addition to the one covered by University benefit plans, the cost of the exam is the employee’s responsibility.
  • The voucher brought to the vendor must be current.
  • Any special instructions must be authorized by Employee Safety and Wellness, prior to the appointment.
  • Personal protective equipment to protect the eyes (safety glasses, goggles that can be worn over your prescription glasses) is also available through the Chemical Control Centre (ccc@uwindsor.ca). Side shields are a minimum requirement for all safety eyeglasses, and glasses must be CSA-approved. If there are hazards within your tasks other than physical objects which create flying particles from the front or side (for example; chemical substances, radiant energy, excessive dusts, etc.), a risk assessment is conducted together with your Supervisor and a representative from the Health and Safety office to determine the most appropriate type of eye protection for your tasks.
