Board approves tender for Odette renovation project

The University of Windsor will issue a call this week for contractors to convert the University Bookstore space in the Odette Building to classrooms, meeting rooms and study and gathering spaces for business students.

According to architectural designs, the $3-million project will include:

  • a 100-seat tiered classroom;
  • a 60-seat tiered classroom;
  • a seminar and lounge area;
  • student study areas and break-out meeting rooms.

In addition, three team project centres will provide space for regional economic development initiatives.

Under the plan approved by the board, the Bookstore will vacate the space in October and construction will be complete by spring 2013.

Athletics director named North America’s best

Athletics director Gord Grace was recognized by his peers yesterday for leading his department through a transformation that has helped to bring the University of Windsor to the forefront of Canadian university athletics.

Grace received the International Athletics Director of the Year Award from the US-based National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics during a luncheon at its annual convention in Dallas. The association represents more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Among the accomplishments it cited in honouring Grace were:

  • the success of Lancer varsity teams, including three national championships in 2011, seven squads ranked in the country’s top 10 that season, and individual student-athletes winning provincial and national recognition;
  • a campus recreation and intramurals sports program praised for its excellence in diversity of programs and student opportunities; and
  • improved athletic facilities that include a new outdoor stadium and the Forge Fitness Centre.

Grace has also taken on leadership in his profession, recently completing a term as president of Ontario University Athletics and serving on the Canadian Interuniversity Sport board of directors.

This winter, he will be back on the international stage as he serves as the chef de mission for Canada’s entry into the 26th FISU World University Games in Trentino, Italy, December 11 to 21.

Something in the wind: engineer’s work cited as provincial exemplar

Who knew that windmills are territorial? According to an article published online this week by the Ontario Council on University Research, UWindsor researcher Rupp Carriveau did—and his work can turn that knowledge into better wind farms.

Placed too close together, turbines interfere with one another, reducing their overall efficiency, but Dr. Carriveau, an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering, is working to determine how strategic placement can exploit the windmills’ wakes to increase power generation.

The article “A flock of windmills,” by Toronto-based writer Patchen Barss, explains how Carriveau is drawing on the strategies employed by migrating geese and other flocking birds to capitalize on the air disturbances caused by their neighbours’ wings to make their own flight more efficient.

Its publication in a blog is part of the Research Matters campaign, a collaboration among Ontario’s 21 universities to find new ways to tell stories about how research is changing lives. The campaign aims to provide wider access to Ontario researchers and their work in an effort to demonstrate the importance of university research to the general public.

Read the full article on the Research Matters Web site. The site will regularly publish articles on research in all sorts of disciplines from every Ontario university; readers may check back for updates.

National holidays complicate shipments from US

People on campus taking shipment of perishables from the United States over the next week should time their arrival to avoid holiday closures, advises the UWindsor finance department.

The University’s customs warehouse in Dearborn, Michigan, will open as usual on Monday, July 2, but because the University will close that day, perishable shipments should arrive no later than Thursday, June 28, to get to their campus destinations before the weekend.

The warehouse will close for Independence Day on Wednesday, July 4. To ensure that perishable goods arrive to the University safely, the finance department suggests they be delivered to the warehouse between Monday, July 9, and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11.
