Editor’s note: This is one in a series of articles about students involved in cool research, scholarly and creative activities during their summer break from classes.

A month-long trip to Russia this summer helped drama student Elizabeth Kalles find a new voice, a greater sense of self-assurance, and a measure of certitude about her artistic aspirations.

Her record of professional and community service has earned drama professor emeritus Diana Mady Kelly the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the Windsor area and the theatre community throughout Canada at a ceremony June 18 at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. Drama grads have high hopes for Dragons’ Den appearance

Drama alumni Mark Lefebvre (BFA 1988) and Kyle Sipkens (BFA 2008) are walking tall after taping a segment for the CBC television series Dragons’ Den to pitch an expansion to their business, Stilt Guys.

The program matches entrepreneurs to investors, and Lefebvre said the two hope to hire more entertainers to join their company, which sends the costumed actors on stilts to make appearances. Already experiencing multiple bookings around busy summer weekends, they want to expand their business so they don’t have to turn down gigs.

Modern comedy to wrap up University Players season

University Players completes its 53rd season with Neil LaBute’s modern comedy Some Girl(s), March 29 to April 1 and April 11 to 15 at Essex Hall Theatre.

This hysterical comedy follows “Guy” – a magazine writer about to be married – to four hotel rooms in four cities, where he meets with four past lovers. He hopes to clear the air between them, which proves difficult considering he fled these relationships years ago and used them as material for his articles. Can this commitment-phobe warm his cold feet without getting burned by his old flames?

A UWindsor history professor says that a staged reading of his new play, The Metropolitan, combines his own area of research with nursing, drama and social justice.

“It’s a great University of Windsor story where you can get these inter-disciplinary collaborations that are products of a close-knit campus,” says Steven Palmer, who holds the Canada Research Chair in History of International Health.
