Drama student makes most of set design opportunity

Designing the set for the University Players production of Nine Girls was daunting, says fourth-year drama major Joshua Quinlan, but he got through it with the support of faculty and staff.

“I have learned so much from this experience—especially my mistakes,” says Quinlan, who plans to pursue graduate study in scenic and costume design.

University Players to stage thriller

University Players will present the thrilling and comedic mystery Nine Girls March 7 to 10 and 13 to 17 at Essex Hall Theatre.

It is a dark and stormy night when eight sorority girls meet at their mountain clubhouse, and discover that their ninth member has been murdered. Their quirky banter makes you forget the seriousness of the situation, and none suspect that one of them could be the killer—until Alice discovers a clue and confides in the wrong girl. Will the girls figure out the true identity of the killer? And how far will the killer go to cover her tracks?

Curtain rises on classic comedy

The University Players production of Tartuffe, the 1664 comic masterpiece by Molière, opened Thursday at Essex Hall Theatre.

The play is directed by drama alumnus Jim Warren, and has been an audience favourite for nearly three and a half centuries. With a soaring and beautiful set, and gorgeous period costumes, this will be a production you won’t want to miss.

Conference to explore traditions of Commedia dell’Arte

A conference at the University of Windsor next weekend will provide an opportunity for young actors to study the theatrical form of Commedia Dell’Arte with professionals from around the globe.

“Crossing Boundaries: Commedia dell’Arte Across Gender, Genre, and Geography” will be held in the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre from Friday to Sunday, February 15 to 17. It will offer a chance to learn—not only from artists in workshop of this mask-based theatrical form—but also in lectures, panel discussions, and paper presentations.

University Players presents Molière’s classic comedy Tartuffe, February 7 to 10 and 13 to 17 at Essex Hall Theatre.

This is a hilarious tour de force by the 17th century master of comedy. Tartuffe is a holy man who dazzles Orgon with his piety, preying on Orgon’s trust and duping him into giving him everything he owns. But Tartuffe hasn’t pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes—the rest of the family sees him for what he is. Will this family be able to save themselves? Their antics while trying to get Orgon to see the truth will leave you on the floor laughing!

Very merry awards celebrate service and teaching in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Jennifer Rocheleau, secretary to then history department, made a most deserving recipient of an award recognizing staff service in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, professor Miriam Wright told attendees at the faculty’s end-of-year celebration, Wednesday in Vanier Hall.

Playwright talks theatre

Cat DelaneyCat Delaney, the playwright of the latest University Players show Welfarewell, was in Windsor to speak about the play with dramatic art students and at the Let’s Talk Theatre luncheon event last weekend.

She described the UWindsor production as “magical … with soaring talents in the cast!”

Windsor grad wins evening of theatre

A University of Windsor alumnus won Monday’s DailyNews trivia contest and free tickets to the University Players in the social satire Welfarewell.

Malcolm Campbell had his entry drawn from all respondents who correctly identified Hansel and Gretel as the tale of a cannibalistic witch, The Over-the-Hill Gang as the tale of elderly electoral malcontents and Ma Barker as a criminal matriarch.
