Scheduled on December 4, 2024, the #IAmSahraBulle Conference is a collaborative effort between the Sahra Bulle Foundation and the Office of the Vice-President of People, Equity, and Inclusion. This hybrid event is dedicated to fostering dialogue, education, and actionable steps against gender-based violence against women and girls, aligning with Canada’s 2024 theme for the 16-Days of Activism, "Come Together, Act Now" Through insightful sessions and engaging discussions, the conference aims to unite advocates, survivors, and change-makers to propel tangible steps in dismantling systemic barriers and promoting gender equality and respect. It's a pivotal moment to empower change and create a more equitable society for all.

 

Presenter Biographies

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Registration and Networking


9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Introduction and Greetings 


9:30 AM – 10:15 AM: 

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and the impact of violence on health impacts and resulting trauma. (Research Perspective)

Presenters: Tori Lewis, Kylie Pazner, Amilia Noftall, Kylee Madison, Ananya Sood, and Dr. Kendall Soucie

Focus: This presentation will discuss and explore the concepts and relationships between Gender-based violence (GBV), trauma, and the health-related impacts of GBV exposure. This research-driven insight provides the foundation for the broader discussions that follow throughout the day.


10:15 AM – 10:30 AM: Morning Break


10:30 AM – 11:15 AM: 

The Health Impact of GBV on Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2S

Presenter: McKenna (Kenna) Robb, MSW, BSW, CYC, RSW (she/her)

Focus: Kenna will explore the intersection of GBV and the health outcomes for Indigenous women, girls, and 2S individuals, emphasizing the unique challenges and systemic factors impacting their experiences. Her presentation deepens the understanding of how culture, history, and community play pivotal roles in health and healing in Indigenous contexts.


11:15 AM – 12:00 PM: 

Silence is Not Protection, It Is Permission

Presenter: Fartumo Kusow

Focus: This presentation explores the devastating impact of silence and privacy mandates in perpetuating gender-based violence. Through the story of my daughter, Sahra Aden Bulle, I share how silence unintentionally gives permission for harm to persist. Attendees will reflect on personal and systemic barriers, engage in actionable advocacy, and commit to breaking the silence to create meaningful change.

12:30 PM – 12:45 PM: 

Survivor Story: Turning Pain into Purpose

Presenter: Cait Alexander

Focus: Cait will share her powerful survivor story, reflecting on her near-fatal experience with GBV. She sheds light on the hidden dynamics of abuse and the transformative power of turning pain into purpose.


12:45 PM – 1:30 PM: 

Student Voices: The Impact of GBV on Youth

Presenters: Students from Herman Secondary Academy

Focus: This student-led session will amplify youth perspectives on the impact of GBV. Sharing personal experiences, students will offer a raw and genuine view of how GBV affects their lives and communities, providing an essential voice to the broader dialogue.


1:30 PM – 1:45 PM: Afternoon Break


1:45 PM – 3:15 PM: 

Interactive Workshop: Dr. Catherine Vanner & Dr. Salsabel Almanssori

Focus: This 90-minute workshop, participants will engage in hands-on learning and gain strategies for understanding the signs of GBV, raising awareness and creating safe spaces in for themselves and those experiencing GBV.


3:15 PM – 3:45 PM:

Breakout Groups with Takeaway Charts

Focus: Participants reflect on what they learned.
