What is a Medical Physicist?
According to the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) (Organisation canadienne des physiciens medicaux (OCPM)), "Medical physicists are health care professionals with specialized training in the medical applications of physics. Their work often involves the use of x-rays, ultrasound, magnetic and electric fields, infra-red and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy. Most medical physicists work in hospital diagnostic imaging departments, cancer treatment facilities, or hospital-based research establishments. Others work in universities, government, and industry."
On Wednesday, October 30th, 2019, Jay Burmeister, PhD, DABR, FAAPM who is the Chief of Physics, Karmanos Cancer Center and a Professor in the Department of Oncology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine gave a presentation to the assembled students of the University of Windsor Department of Physics. Dr. Burmeister talked about careers in medical physics and gave an excellent introduction to what the field of medical physics is generally. He then talked specifically about graduate studies in Medical Physics at Wayne State University. Many undergraduate medical physics majors from the University of Windsor’s Department of Physics have had very successful careers that started in Windsor. CLICK on the picture to watch the video.
