OUR NEXT "FOR THE LOVE OF READING" EVENT: Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right

Thursday, January 23, 2025 - 13:00

REMINDER!

Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right

OUR NEXT "FOR THE LOVE OF READING" EVENT:

Please come to the WURA Social Committee's next For the Love of Reading event --Thursday, January 23, 1-3 pm.

Christina Simmons will discuss Berkeley sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild’s 2024 book, Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right, which explores the lives and perspectives of (mostly) white men in the whitest and second-poorest Congressional district in the U.S.–Pike County, Kentucky–which voted heavily for Donald Trump.

The event will be both ONLINE and IN-PERSON at the new WURA house–360 Sunset Ave. But please consider coming in person to enjoy refreshments and to socialize after we finish discussing the book. For those who’ve not been in it yet, the house is really beautiful and worth seeing, and in-person gatherings are great. Weather is due to moderate a bit from the bitter cold by Thursday.

You do not need to have read the book to participate–surely many of you have opinions already about what is going on in U.S. politics! So please come and listen and enjoy the company of fellow retirees.

The ZOOM link for people who wish to participate on-line is:

If you're attending in person, please rsvp to Christina Simmons (simmonc@uwindsor.ca) so that we can make appropriate plans for refreshments.

Parking is available in the Assumption Church parking lot off University Ave.

Stolen Pride book coverStolen Pride - The New Press

For all the attempts to understand the state of American politics and the blue/red divide, we’ve ignored what economic and cultural loss can do to pride. What happens, Arlie Russell Hochschild asks, when a proud people in a hard-hit region suffer the deep loss of pride and are confronted with a powerful political appeal that makes it feel “stolen”?
