Below are research updates for our research project:
- Xu Zhang has joined our research project as a volunteer, January 2021
- A literature search was completed (April 2021)
- We have decided to pursue a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant to further our research
- We invited members of the local school boards with an interest in our project to join us for a Microsoft Teams discussion to determine if they want to be a partner on our grant application (May 2021)
- The Greater Essex County District Board has agreed to join us on the project (June 2021)
- We submitted a University of Windsor Research Ethics Board application (August 2021), which was conditionally approved (September 2021).
- We have prepared and submitted a SSHRC Partnership Engage grant application (August-September 2021).
- We submitted an application for review to the GECDSB research ethics committee (October 2021).
- Our SSHRC Partnership Engage grant application was approved (December 2022).
- We received ethics clearance from the University of Windsor Research Ethics Board (January 2022).
- Due to the pandemic, we delayed our data collection until fall 2022 (January 2022).
- Parental permission letters were developed in native languages and sent to parents of prospective participants (August 2022).
- An operational research plan was developed (November 2022).
- We received a one-year extension on the SSHRC Partnership Engage grant due to COVID-19 impact (November 2022).
- The first student quantitative survey was administered (November-December 2022).
- Focus group discussions held for staff/faculty and students (December 2022).
- Two new Mitacs Globalink Summer 2023 Interns joined our research team (December 2022).
- The first quantitative survey (part 1) was closed (January) and a copy was made active to receive late survey data (this will be closed in late February). Meanwhile, we conducted further student focus groups/interviews and encouraged research participants (students) to complete the journals.
- The end-of-year quantitative survey was closed (July 2023).
- Analysis of our data (July-September 2023).
- We presented our research to the GECDSB principals (April 2024).
- A conference paper, Educator and Student Perspectives for Enjamcomg Omtermatopma; Students' Sense of Belonging in Ontario Secondary Schools, was presented at the Canadian Association of Public Schools-International (CAPS-I) Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, ON (May 2024).
- A conference paper, Educator and Student Perspectives for Enjamcomg Omtermatopma; Students' Sense of Belonging in Ontario Secondary Schools, was presented at the Candian Society for the Study of Education Conference in Montreal, PQ (June 2024).
- Our article has been submitted to the Research in Comparative and International Education Journal.
