Peer Mentorship Program

The Faculty of Nursing's peer mentor program operates in the General Lab and Simulation Labs. Mentors are available for fellow students who may need encouragement and assistance while practicing their clinical skills in the labs.

Mentors prepare, clean, set up equipment, and perform maintenance. They also conduct inventory checks, restock supplies, and assist lab instructors as needed.

Only BScN students entering their third year are considered for mentor positions. Prospective mentors must apply, provide references from their clinical instructors, and meet criteria. Only students satisfying the requirements will be contacted for interviews. If successful, candidates will be offered positions and upon acceptance, will be assigned to either General or Simulation Labs.

Peer mentors are critical for our labs. This is a fast paced, professional, and accountable role that takes commitment and dedication.

Please take into consideration before applying. Please do not contact your lab or clinical instructors to fill out forms before you have been nominated. You will receive an email with further instructions.

Hiring process for peer mentors in General or Simulation labs

  1. In April or May, lab and clinical professors teaching 2nd year will be notified to nominate students. Students must be in 2nd year at that time. Students can discuss, in person, with their clinical or lab instructor about their interest in the peer mentor program.
  2. Once nominated student names are received, candidates are contacted by email in May or June to confirm their interest in applying for peer mentor positions.
  3. If the candidate agrees to apply for a peer mentor position, more information will follow requiring them to submit a package that includes:
    • Resume.
    • Transcript.
    • A written paragraph on why they want to be a peer mentor.
    • The clinical or lab instructor recommendation form.
  4. Packages will be reviewed by the Clinical Lab Coordinator.
  5. Candidates who meet all requirements will be contacted by email for an interview in June.
  6. Once all interviews are completed and reviewed, successful and unsuccessful candidates will be notified.
  7. The successful candidates will be offered a position in July. More information on orientation will be provided at this time. The position starts end of August.

Peer mentor positions are offered for a 2-year term based on performance in the role. Evaluations are done yearly and as needed to support the continuation or termination of the role. Hours of commitment may vary. Details will be discussed at the interview.
