Programming
In partnership with Adapted physical exercise (APEX) Research Group in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Living Essex County, the APEX program provides adults with an intellectual disability inclusive, barrier-free participation in physical activity and sport. In the APEX program, participants enhance overall health and quality of life through bi-weekly, one-to-one personal training sessions of adapted physical exercise programming with an undergraduate Human Kinetics student for a series of 13 weeks.
The Toldo Lancer Centre is committed to ensuring that all members feel comfortable during their visit. TLC offers various dedicated and private programming to give women the opportunity to get active in a safe and comfortable environment. During women’s only programming you can expect:
- In the pool, during women’s only swim, the space is open only to members who self-identify as a woman. The doors are closed, blinds are drawn and all lifeguards on duty are knowledgeable staff who also identify as a woman.
- During women’s only fitness classes, the space is open only to participants who self-identify as a woman and are staffed by instructors who also identify as a woman. The doors are closed during the women-only designated times.

- During LGBTQ+ programming you can expect: In the pool, during LGBTQ+ inclusive swim, the space is open to all members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.
- During LGBTQ+ inclusive fitness classes, the space is open to all members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

Facility Access + Amenities

- Two elevators offer access to both levels of the facility and are located past the Dr. Richard Peddie Lancer Commons seating area towards the pool
- Automatic and accessible entryways located on the north and south side of the building
- All restrooms in the Toldo Lancer Centre are wheelchair accessible
- Automatic, touchless faucets
- Three universal restrooms located on the first level by the pool and the Triple Gymnasium
- All universal washrooms are equipped with an adjustable adult change table to assist with client/user transport
- One universal change area is located on the main Level
- Trained service animals as defined by the Ontario government are welcome at the Toldo Lancer Centre
- Support persons accompanying a person with a disability will be allowed to access the facility free of charge

The Toldo Lancer Centre Pool is a fully wheelchair-accessible space. The facility has the following accessibility features:
- Accessible entrances
- A zero-entry ramp to allow visitors with a disability or mobility limitations greater access
- Water wheelchairs for accessible entry
- Large and spacious gendered and universal change areas
- Each change area is features an accessible shower, equipped with seating and hand-held mobile faucets
- Accessible washrooms in all three change areas (universal- 3, men’s-1, women’s-1)
- Universal change area is equipped with three adjustable adult change tables to assist with client/user transport
- Retractable solar screens to accommodate modesty requirements and discretion during designated swim times
- Acoustic paneling for sound dampening during busy swim times for visitors with hearing impairments and/or sensory sensitivities
- Ambient lighting to illuminate the pool
- Water temperature is variable between 85-87 degrees fahrenheit
The UW Fitness Centre is a fully accessible space. The facility has the following accessibility features:
- Open concept design with accessible pathways
- Wide entrance with automatic gates to accommodate wheelchair accessibility
- Elevator from the main level of the Fitness Centre to the second level where various strength and cardio machines are located
- Large and spacious gendered and universal washrooms located past the Fitness Centre
- Each change area features an accessible shower, equipped with seating and hand-held mobile faucets
- Accessible washrooms in all three change areas (universal- 3, men’s-1, women’s-1)
- Universal change area is equipped with three adjustable adult change tables to assist with client/user transport
- Onsite trainer, available during business hours, to assist individuals with spotting, technique, etc.
- Accessible fitness equipment includes:
- Matrix Krankcycle provides an accessible option for upper body cardio and strength training
- Cable unit systems to provide accessible cable training options that can adjust to any height
- Recumbent bikes allow visitors with mobility limitations greater access to cardiovascular equipment
- Modifying strength and conditioning equipment
- Ambient lighting to illuminate machines and equipment
- Ambient lighting to illuminate entire room and equipment
- No mirrors to boost inclusivity
- Concept 2 Ski Erg to provides accessible upper body cardio and strength training
- Matrix Connexus units to allow for a wide range of activity for all abilities and ages
- Automatic doors to access the Triple Gymnasium
- Bleacher entrance located on the second level and can be accessed by stairs or elevator
- Concession stand is accessible to guests with disabilities
- Wheelchair accessible seating on the court during varsity games
- Four scoreboards on all corners of the triple gym with large LED-video board to accommodate visitors with visual impairments
- Accessible sidewalks or walkways support the diverse needs of people of all abilities
- Six accessible parking spaces available in front of the Toldo Lancer Centre grand entrance (includes two accessible van parking spots)
- Drop-off and pickup location near grand entrance
- Pedestrian crossover with flashing signal lights and accessible pedestrian signals, to alert pedestrians and vehicles of crossing from the Human Kinetics parking lot on College Avenue to the Toldo Lancer Centre
