The benefits of nanocrystalline solid lubricants were envisioned long ago, but until now there has been no cost-effective and efficient manufacturing method available to apply solid lubricants in the sliding components of an automobile. There is a technological gap that needs to be bridged to utilize the unlimited opportunities offered by these materials. The new solid lubricant composite spraying technology is developed. By adapting the proposed technology, future automotive engines can run more efficiently and be maintenance free as well as operate with less oil, less wear, and with greater fuel economy. Successful implementation of this project will also benefit the environment, since a significant decrease of liquid lubricant consumption—due to the replacement of lubricant additives with solid lubricants—will greatly reduce or eliminate the environmental risk, which, at present, is a global problem.
