Temporary Part Time Vacancy for approximately one year


PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Health Justice Clinic Supervising Lawyer provides supervision and guidance to the University of Windsor’s Law students participating in the Health Justice Clinic in Mental Health and Addictions. The Health Justice Clinic is a collaboration with the Empowerment Council.  The Clinic provides direct legal services, including summary advice and representation, to individuals with mental health and addiction disabilities. We are seeking a Lawyer to oversee law students as they provide legal services in the areas of Immigration and Refugee Law and Housing Law. The role involves supervising students, reviewing their work, and providing guidance on client matters. They will ensure students comply with all Law Society of Ontario rules and bylaws and other office policies and procedures.  

Location: Remote, in-person, or hybrid (based at the Empowerment Council's office at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario)


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Minimum requirement of an LL.B. or J.D.
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Experience and knowledge in the mental health law
  • Familiarity with advocacy organizations relevant to the clinic areas of practice
  • Cultural competence
  • Experience in the areas of clinic practice
  • Experience managing and/or supervising students and volunteers
  • Experience appearing before administrative tribunals
  • Must abide by the rules of professional conduct
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with discretion
  • Ability to work co-operatively with other members of staff, including showing initiative in addressing and resolving issues
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written
  • Exhibit professional approach to work, including reliable and dependable attendance
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
