Service Centralization

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce costs and maximize efficiency, the University is centralizing some campus services, including IT/AV support, communications, advancement and, in the future, events. Other services such as mail distribution and custodial services are also being streamlined.

The goal is to reduce duplication, consolidate resources, and ensure consistent service delivery with fewer staff to improve operational efficiency amid budget challenges. Throughout this process, the University remains committed to its academic mission, the student experience, and meeting the needs of the campus community.

The changes affect 56 CUPE 1393 positions, eight of which are vacant. Centrally, 29 new CUPE 1393 roles are being created, for a net reduction of 27 CUPE 1393 positions. All new positions will be filled based on terms of the collective agreement.

The layoffs and associated bumping has begun.

The goal is to maintain standard service support levels with fewer staff by optimizing resources and streamlining processes to meet campus-wide service needs.

Professors, instructors, and staff will be adapting to a new service delivery model, and staff across campus will be transitioning to new roles, responsibilities, and delivery methods. It will require adjustments from both users and providers, and patience and understanding from the University community.

Support and services will be provided campus-wide, with each centralized unit making decisions and prioritizing requests following best practices. Service models are designed to offer flexibility and streamline the support process.

All work will remain in respective unions. Directors and managers will work closely with their teams to set clear expectations and address any workload concerns/issues. It is expected that any new assigned duties will remain within a reasonable range of variance and would not necessitate a job evaluation.

Human Resources will provide onboarding help and other targeted supports and resources. Managers and directors needing assistance should reach out to their Human Resources Designated Business Partner.  Additionally, the campus community is reminded of the mental health and other support resources available for faculty and staff, including the Employee Assistance Program.

These changes should not affect academic program delivery, degree completion, or graduation.
