Enhance Your Teaching Credentials Additional Qualification (AQ) courses are accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and enable educators to upgrade their skills, specialize in subject areas, and expand their teaching divisions. Successful completion of these courses is reflected on your Certificate of Qualification, viewed by Ontario school boards for hiring purposes.


Course Categorization

AQ Course Categories AQ courses are categorized into five schedules as per the OCT:

These courses are intended for candidates who wish to obtain another division. The Faculty of Education offers ABQ in the Primary and Junior Division and a number of subject specific courses in the Intermediate and Senior Divisions. With all but a few exceptions, ABQ courses have specific undergraduate credit pre-requisites.

Prerequisites:

  • Intermediate Basic (Health & Physical Education, Drama, First Nation, Metis, Inuit, Religious Education in Catholic Schools)
    • No university course prerequisites

  • Intermediate Basic (English, Math*, Science, Geography, History, etc.)
    • TWO full university degree credit courses in the subject
      • *successful completion of Math Proficiency Test in lieu of university courses
      • *Note: Course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.
      • Official transcripts must be received before the course start date

  • Senior Basic (any subject)
    • FIVE full university degree credit courses in the subject
    • For candidates who already hold a Senior Basic Qualification, a minimum of two full university degree credits in the subject area
      • *Note: Course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.
      • Official transcripts must be received before the course start date

 

These courses are intended for candidates who wish to obtain qualification in a technological subject area at the grade 9 and 10 level and/or at the grade 11 or 12 level.

Grade 9/10 level

  • Educators with existing technological education qualifications:
    • An entry for the same technological education subject in grade 9 and 10 and in grade 11 and 12.
  • Educators without technological education qualifications:
    • Five years of work experience, including business or industrial experience, or a combination of postsecondary education and work experience that totals five years.

Grade 11/12 level

  • a Certificate of Qualification and Registration with Technological Education Qualifications
  • 12 months’ work experience, including business or industrial experience, in which you used skills and knowledge related to the subject OR
  • post-secondary education equivalent to 12 months’ work experience, including business or industrial experience, in which you used skills and knowledge related to the subject OR
  • a combination thereof.

These courses are intended for candidates who wish to obtain qualification in an area which targets most recent professional development.

Prerequisites

  • You must hold a Basic Qualification in the respective Primary or Junior or Intermediate or Senior divisions in general studies.

By completing Parts 1, 2 and Specialist, candidates will receive a Specialist recognition and may wish to consult with the Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario (QECO) or the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSST) to have their Certificate of Qualifications re-evaluated for a category change.

Prerequisites

  • Part 1: You must hold a Basic Qualification in the respective Primary or Junior or Intermediate or Senior divisions in general studies
  • Part 2:
    • Minimum ONE year of certified teaching experience by the first day of the course, subsequent to certification.  One year is equal to 196 days.
    • Part 1 completed
  • Part 3:
    • Minimum TWO years certified teaching experience by the first day of the course, subsequent to certification including ONE year in the specialized subject area
    • Part 2 completed

These courses target leadership in a particular subject and prepare candidates for Educational Leadership positions. Honour Specialist courses have specific undergraduate credit pre-requisites along with a two-year teaching experience as verified by a Superintendent.

Prerequisites:

  • FOUR-year (20 full courses) academic undergraduate degree equivalent to 120 credits, (excluding education courses); NINE full courses (non-education) in the subject of the Honour Specialist, with a minimum B average.
    • Official transcripts must be received before the course start date. 
  • Minimum TWO years certified teaching experience by the first day of the course, subsequent to certification including at least ONE year in the specialized subject area.

The PQP supports candidates working in a variety of educational settings and will explore, in an integrated delivery model, topics and issues of particular relevance to the context in which they work or may work.

Prerequisites:

  • Part I
    • An acceptable university degree
    • A Certificate of Qualification indicating concentrations in three teaching divisions including the Intermediate Division
    • A Confirmation of Teaching Experience form indicating five years of successful teaching experience, certified by an appropriate supervisory officer
      Teaching experience must be completed prior to the first day of the course.
  • and one of the following:
    • A Certificate of Qualification indicating a Specialist or Honour Specialist qualification and, successful completion of at least half the number of courses required to qualify for a master's degree, or an additional Specialist or Honour Specialist qualification as indicated on the Certificate of Qualification
    • A master's degree or doctorate as indicated on a Certificate of Qualification
    • Successful completion of the number of graduate university courses equivalent to the number of graduate courses required to qualify for a master's degree
  • Part II
    • A Certificate of Qualification indicating successful completion of the Principal's Qualification Program Part 1
    • Proof of successful completion of the Practicum

Before you Register

Make sure that you have reviewed the prerequisites for the course(s) in which you are interested. If you register for a course and then are forced to withdraw due to not possessing the proper prerequisites, you will still be subject to the $100 non-refundable administration fee.

General Requirements

  • Candidates must meet admission qualifications as per Regulation 184-97 of the Ontario College of Teachers Act.
  • A valid Certificate of Qualification, Interim Certificate of Qualification, or Letter of Eligibility is required.
  • Ontario B.Ed students may enroll if they meet graduation requirements and have applied for an OCT Certificate of Qualification.
