Three Lancer teams advanced to the next round of the Ontario University Athletics playoffs with victories over the weekend. The men’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball all notched conference semi-final wins.
The men’s hockey team swept past Guelph with a pair of wins. Thursday at Windsor Arena, defenceman Steve Ferry had a goal and assisted on Spencer Pommels’ game winner in a 2-1 final. In Guelph on Saturday, Ferry sent a pass to Pommels, who one-timed it for the game’s only goal. Parker Van Buskirk backstopped the Lancers in both games.
Next up, Windsor will face the winner of the Western-Waterloo series for the conference title. Read “Men’s Hockey advances to Western Conference Finals.”
Men clinch berth in OUA basketball final four
Lien Phillip’s 21 points and 13 rebounds led the Lancer men’s basketball team to an 85-61 home court victory Saturday over the Brock Badgers, earning Windsor a berth in the Wilson Cup Final Four tournament, next weekend in Toronto. Windsor will face Ottawa in a provincial semi-final contest on Friday. The winner will qualify to play in Saturday’s OUA title game as well as in the national championship tournament. Women to play for west division basketball title
Five players scored in double digits as the Lancer women’s basketball team knocked off the Western Mustangs, 78-50, Saturday at the St. Denis Centre. The fieldhouse will host the west division final against the McMaster Marauders on March 2; tip-off is at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the provincial championship a week later. Lancers surrender OUA track and field championships
The Lancer track and field teams turned in a strong performance at home for the Ontario University Athletics championship meet Thursday and Friday. The men’s team finished second in total points, giving up the top spot for the first time in 14 years to the Guelph Gryphons. The women also had their title streak stopped after a three-year run, finishing fourth in total points.
Among the male medalists for Windsor were:
- Gold for Matt Walters, bronze for Nick Falk in the 3000m run
- Gold for Matt Walters in the 1500m run
- Gold for Aaron Bowman in the 60m run
- Gold in the 4x400m relay for the team of Aaron Bowman, Leonae Nichol, Matt McKeegan and Shane Kelly
- Silver for Arren Young in long jump
- Silver in the 4x800m relay for the team of Alex Ullman, Jordan Wand, Taylor McArthur and Paul La Marra
- Bronze for Jake Pfaff in pole vault
- Bronze for Branden Wilhelm in high jump
Windsor’s women medalists included:
- Gold for Celine Freeman-Gibb, silver for Shealyn McLaughlin in shot put
- Gold for Ami Schimanski, silver for Shealyn McLaughlin in weight throw
- Gold for Amilia Di Chiara in the 60m hurdles
- Bronze for Emily Omahen in long jump
- Bronze for Jalicia Clarke in the 60m run
- Bronze in the 4x200m relay for Camille Wallace, Emilie Halle, Emily Omahen and Nathana Griffiths
- Bronze in the 4x400m relay for Emilie Halle, Samantha Kellam, Heather Kurpe and Camille Wallace
