Communications grads wearing red for women in the film industry

Bright red lipstick is the first thing you would notice about Daniella Bumbacco and Catrina Franzoi while they are on set working as LadyMeta Movement, the production company the two UWindsor communications, media, and film grads started over a year ago.

“The first rule of LadyMeta is, at all times red lipstick must be worn on set,” said Franzoi. “We started it on our first set in 2011 and have kept it going, almost like our identifier.”

The pair has found that running their own company gives them the power to maintain artistic freedom.

Music students to entertain mass photo subjects

Attendees at Friday’s event to celebrate the University of Windsor’s takeover of the former Windsor Star buildings will be entertained by a band of music students.

The jazz group the Udder Guys—house band at the Milk Coffee Bar—will be playing while students and alumni, faculty and staff, and community members gather for a mass crowd photo in front of the buildings at the corner of Pitt and Ferry streets in downtown Windsor.

Weekend concert to continue Christmas choral tradition

The University of Windsor School of Music will continue with a 36-year-old Christmas tradition Sunday, December 2, when the Chamber Choir and the University Singers will present A Festival of Christmas at Assumption Church.

The students have been preparing for the choral celebration since September. It will start at 3 p.m. and will be conducted by Bradley Bloom and Richard Householder.

Deadline today to buy tickets for women’s basketball mimosa breakfast

Today is the last chance to buy tickets to a champagne and orange juice breakfast in support of Lancer women’s basketball, Sunday, December 2, at 10 a.m. in Ambassador Auditorium.

The Mimosa Breakfast Celebration is a fundraiser in support of the team, undefeated to start the season in pursuit of its third-straight national championship. In addition to an opportunity to meet the players and head coach Chantal Vallée, the event promises a buffet meal and a silent auction.

Social justice advocate to head up Community Legal Aid, Legal Assistance and poverty law clinics

Lawyer, teacher and social justice advocate Marion Overholt, a 1981 graduate of Windsor Law, will begin an appointment as executive director of the faculty’s Community Legal Aid, Legal Assistance of Windsor and poverty law clinics in January 2013.

In making the announcement, dean Camille Cameron emphasized the Faculty of Lawʼs commitment to supporting access to justice and to providing law students with rich opportunities for clinical and experiential learning.

Lecture to examine entrails of US elections

A free public lecture in the Department of Political Science distinguished speaker series Thursday will address the results of this month’s elections in the United States.

Doug Koopman, a political science professor at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will deliver his lecture “The Young and the Religious: New Findings from the 2012 Elections” at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 29, in room 203, Toldo Health Education Centre.

Jazz standards to grace concert program

The University Jazz Ensemble will add some seasonal flavour to a program of great standards during its end-of-semester concert on Friday, November 30, at Banwell Community Church.

Under the direction of Bob Fazecash, the ensemble will ring some Jingle Bells along with a selection of charts that includes Billie Holiday’s God Bless the Child and Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon, as well as You’re Nobody til Somebody Loves You.

Along with the big band of more than 20 musicians, the concert will feature a set by more intimate student combo.

Top moustache growing honours awarded at fund-raising luncheon

Dino Spagnuolo’s first ever attempt at growing a moustache turned out to be a winner.

A clerk in the Leddy Library’s media centre, Spagnuolo tied for top honours with Dave Smith, an analyst in the university’s planning and budgets department, in a campus moustache growing contest.

“It’s an honour to have been chosen as a co-winner from among all these great-looking guys,” Spagnuolo said yesterday after a lunch held at the University Club to pick the winners.

Downtown businesses planning to put smiles on the faces of mass photo participants

Downtown businesses are preparing to welcome participants in Friday’s mass photo shoot marking the occasion of the official transfer of ownership of the former Windsor Star buildings to the University of Windsor.

“Say Cheese for the Keys” will record the historic moment at noon; buses will shuttle students, staff and faculty from Vanier Circle starting at 11 a.m.
