Contest winner to take in a show

Laurie Freeman-Gibb, a lecturer in nursing, won Wednesday’s DailyNews trivia quiz and the prize of four tickets to see a screening at the Windsor International Film Festival.

Her name was drawn from all those who correctly identified the featured works of UWindsor filmmakers: Josh Mellanby’s No Shelter , Kim Nelson’s Berliner and Owen Eric Wood’s Return.

Lancers to celebrate successes with banner-raising ceremony on Friday evening

The Lancer men’s and women’s basketball teams will open the 2011-12 season with a pair of home games this weekend at the St. Denis Centre. Windsor will host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday and the York Lions on Saturday; the women will play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. both nights.

Fans will want to be sure to attend Friday, as the Department of Athletics honours the University of Windsor’s three reigning Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship teams.

Friday ceremony to observe Remembrance Day

The University of Windsor campus community is invited to a special Remembrance Day ceremony Friday, November 11, at 10:45 a.m. in front of Memorial Hall.

UWindsor President Alan Wildeman will preside over the ceremony.

“Remembrance Day is a day of great significance,” Dr. Wildeman said. “It is a day for us to honour those who have died or who have made other profound and lasting sacrifices for what they and our country believe in."

Exhibition to provide a peek into the past

The Assumption Heritage Trust Foundation presents an exhibition of pieces preserved by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, Wednesday, November 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Windsor.

Organizers promise “a peek into the past and a look into the future.”

Connie Giglio, the foundation’s director of public affairs, said the teaching order had touched countless lives since its founding in 1843.

Campus Police offering women’s self-defence course

Campus Community Police is offering a free self-defence course to female students and employees at the University of Windsor in two six-hour sessions starting at noon on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13.

The Rape Aggression Defence program provides realistic self-defence tactics and techniques for women. The RAD System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defence training.
