Welcome Week not just for students, say organizers

Faculty and staff can help to make new students feel at home while gearing themselves up for the new school year by participating in Windsor Welcome Week activities, says organizer Soula Serra of the Educational Development Centre.

“First of all, we hope to get every office or department involved,” Serra says. “So if you have any material you would like us to distribute throughout the first week from the Welcome Tent, please drop off 200 to 500 flyers or items of swag to room 117, Dillon Hall by Thursday, August 30.”

Tenacious student credits success to UWindsor support

Jennifer Bauder hopes, when she graduates from UWindsor, to work in a field providing counseling to women and children. In the meantime, this mother of two, who is studying social work and disability studies, has some advice for her fellow students: “Don’t be too proud to ask for help.”

Bauder, who has a visual disability, credits Anthony Gomez, a disability advisor and assistive technologist in the University’s Educational Development Centre, among those who helped her along the path to a B-plus grade in a required statistics course.

Educational support services help student adjust to Canadian university life

As a student new to Canada, Syeda Fariha found it difficult to adjust to the differing expectations of her professors. She transferred to Windsor in fall 2011 after two years studying economics in her native Bangladesh.

“In the beginning, I had no friends and I was struggling with my studies,” she recalls. “I was frustrated and disappointed.”

However, Connecting4Success and other programs of the Educational Development Centre have helped her gain confidence.

Deadline approaching for welcome week event proposals

Event proposals for Windsor Welcome Week 2012 received after a deadline of Friday, July 6, may not be approved and definitely will not be included in the handbook, organizers warn.

Program orientation is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5. The Educational Development Centre asks that all programs submit their event plans for the day using the official proposal form.

New student orientation program giving attendees a Head Start

The academic orientation program Head Start continues June 7, 8 and 11 with sessions for students in human kinetics, arts, or social science programs.
The program, organized by the Educational Development Centre, includes information sessions about university life for both students and parents; academic advising; presentations on residence and food services; an information fair highlighting campus services; tours and more.

Web site to match volunteer interests and opportunities

Recruiting volunteers and finding volunteer opportunities has never been so easy.

A new Web site, www.uwindsor.ca/volunteer, will showcase events requiring volunteer help and allow UWindsor students to register with their interests and availability. They will be matched automatically with the specifications of event organizers and volunteer recruiters from any department or office.

Orientation program to give new students a Head Start on university life

More than 1,000 newly-admitted first-year students—and their families—will get their first taste of campus life starting this week, as they attend the Head Start academic orientation program.

The program, organized by the Educational Development Centre, includes information sessions about university life for both students and parents; academic advising; presentations on residence and food services; an information fair highlighting campus services; tours and more.

Days are divided by faculty:

Organizing committee invites proposals for Welcome Week events

Events must be inclusive and accessible for all, and must contribute toward at least of the desired outcomes:
