Circular approach to economy promotes sustainability

By joining the circular economy movement, UWindsor students, faculty, and staff can minimize waste and promote sustainable use of resources.

A circular economy emphasizes the reduction of waste and the extension of a product’s lifespan, as opposed to a linear process where products are made, used, and discarded. In a circular economy, better design, reduced consumption of raw materials, and increased value throughout the product life cycle creates a sustainable, closed-loop system that circulates resources for as long as possible.

From small daily changes like using reusable containers to more significant decisions like purchasing refurbished electronics, there are numerous ways for members of the campus community to make a positive impact.

  1. Reducing food waste: Check out the waste sorting bins, including organics collection in the CAW Student Centre. The new fibrous clamshell food containers in the Marketplace should be disposed of in the organics bin along with all food scraps.
  2. Choosing reusable mugs and bottles: Patrons who use a reusable mug or tumbler will receive a discount when purchasing hot beverages at campus food venues. Also, remember to bring your reusable water bottles to reduce single-use plastic use on campus.
  3. Give items a second chance: Donate gently-used clothing and other items to local shelters and charities; non-perishable food items can be donated to the Campus Food Pantry. Old textbooks can be donated in Textbook for Change bins across campus.
By embracing initiatives like waste reduction and reusable mugs, the University of Windsor community can contribute to building a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. Learn more about Waste Reduction and Recycling on campus.
