Drama professor Lionel Walsh will direct a production of Mary’s Wedding in performances over the next two weekends as a collaboration between his Inspired Acting Lab and Heritage Colchester.

One of the first full-length works by playwright Stephen Massicotte, Mary’s Wedding was the winner of the 2000 Alberta Playwriting Competition and premiered at Alberta Theatre Projects in 2002.

On the night before her wedding, Mary dreams of her relationship with Charlie, a farm boy who is sheltering with his horse from a thunderstorm. They fall in love, but the First World War begins, and Charlie goes off to fight with the Canadian Armed Forces in France. The story is told with the freedom and magic of a dream.

“Mary’s Wedding is a beautiful love story full of tenderness, joy, humour, sorrow, and survival,” says Walsh.

The venue is Colchester’s Christ Church Anglican Church, 190 Bagot St., with shows July 18 to 21 and 25 to 28. The curtain rises for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.
