Staffers to serve sweet cider to students

Hot apple cider, doughnut holes, and orchard-fresh apples are on offer for UWindsor students during lunchtime Wednesday, Oct. 18, outside the east entrance to the student centre.

The giveaway is sponsored by Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the University’s trades, technical, and professional staff. The student appreciation event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue while supplies last.

To cut down waste, organizers invite students to bring a reusable mug to hold their cider.

Michael NaickerEducator and author Michael Naicker will discuss his journey from Africa to Windsor in a free public presentation Wednesday.

Educator and author chronicles immigrant life

The Humanities Research Group (HRG) welcomes educator and author Michael Naicker to the downtown campus on Wednesday, Oct. 18, to relate his journey from Africa to Windsor.

The author of African Sons: The Zululander, Naicker will detail his autobiography from the sacrifices his ancestors made in crossing into Africa through the dark days of apartheid to growing up as an Indian in a racially segregated society, all of which set the stage for his evolution as an educator to his own modern day political action and voyage of discovery.

Naicker was born in South Africa and grew up in Zululand. He was active in the teacher unions in South Africa. These activities led to his involvement in the amalgamation of all teacher unions into one non-racial teacher union in South Africa. This early involvement led to a natural transition into municipal politics.

Naicker and his family have made Windsor their home since 2005. Currently a vice-principal in a Windsor school, Naicker has been in education for more than 27 years, with a teaching career that has taken him all over Africa, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

This event, co-sponsored by Assumption University, is free and open to the public. It will begin at 5 p.m. in the SoCA Armouries Performance Hall, 37 University Ave. East. Copies of Naicker’s book African Sons: The Zululander will be available for purchase.

Keifer Bell with NBA championshiop trophyKeifer Bell is one of the alumni surveyed as part of the SportBusiness ranking. An integral part of his Master’s program was his internship with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment in 2019, the year the company’s Toronto Raptors captured the NBA championship.

Master of Sport Management and Leadership program named best in Canada

UWindsor’s Master of Sport Management and Leadership has once again been named the best graduate program in sports business in all of Canada.

The recently released yearly ranking by SportBusiness, a global consulting and analysis firm which puts out a leading trade publication in the field, says the UWindsor program is not only the best in Canada, but among the best in the world.

“We are proud of these results and continuing to be recognized with the elite company of programs around the world,” said Terry Eddy, the faculty’s graduate admissions co-ordinator and an associate professor in the program.

“Our program offers internship opportunities and independent research projects that provide a gateway to the industry by balancing theory and practice,” Dr. Eddy said. “This international recognition validates our approach to giving students a career-focused education in sport management and leadership.”

For the ratings, SportBusiness surveys graduates and course leaders. Rankings are based on such factors as the quality of teaching, quality of curriculum, return on investment, industry networks, and extracurricular initiatives. It also looks at the employability of graduates.

“This is a quality program, and the fact we rank well in this global survey year after year attests to that,” said Linda Rohr, dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics. “Our low student-to-faculty ratio and small class sizes allow for one-on-one guidance and mentorship from our outstanding faculty members, and, as this survey shows, it pays dividends for our graduates.”

Alumnus Keifer Bell, senior customer success manager for digital sports marketing firm Rover, was part of the 2020 graduating class SportBusiness surveyed for this year’s ranking.

Born and raised in Moncton, NB, Bell chose the UWindsor program for the internship opportunities that set it apart. During his Master’s studies, Bell interned with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, an experience he says launched his career.

“I landed a job with the Toronto Blue Jays right after graduation,” Bell said. “Having that internship on my resumé is so valuable. It makes it easier to get your foot in the door.”

Bell exudes enthusiasm as he talks about his current job with Rover. Working remotely from his home in Halifax, Bell directs mobile app marketing campaigns to the fans of more than two dozen professional football, hockey, and basketball teams.

He says he has his UWindsor degree to thank: “The program’s industry connections set me up for this.”

SportBusiness has been publishing its analysis of graduate programs since 2012. The University of Windsor routinely ranks No. 1 in Canada.

The annual ranking is geared toward students weighing which program to choose.

Authors C. M. Forest and Ainslie Hogarth and filmmakers Nicholas Shields and Michael Stasko promise a conversation about horror, producing work in Windsor-Essex County, and the literary and cinematic arts on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

A partnership between the alumni association and the River Bookshop, the event will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Hole in the Wall community space above the shop, located at 67 Richmond St. in Amherstburg.

Shields (BA 1995) is co-founder of the boutique production house Suede Productions. Its latest feature film, the psychological thriller Depraved Mind, is currently making the rounds in festivals throughout North America and will be screened at the Windsor International Film Festival on Oct. 27.

Stasko (BA 2002) has written, produced, and directed five feature films that range from comedy to sci-fi to drama.
