Students sought to share stories of success

The Office of Enrolment Management – Recruitment is looking for highly engaged UWindsor students to join the team to ignite passion for the University as student ambassadors.

The group will build relationships with prospective students and applicants by sharing their enthusiasm for all aspects of the UWindsor academic and student-life experience.

“Our goal is to recruit a group who will represent a variety of UWindsor experiences, with a focus on their undergraduate story,” says the program co-ordinator, Achol Bab.

Students with lived experiences and fluency in a second language associated with the following international regions are encouraged to apply: Latin America, Brazil, Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, China, West Africa, East Africa, South-East Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and the U.S.

Student ambassadors contribute to recruitment by sharing their stories on how they’ve thrived at events, conducting tours, connecting virtually with prospects and applicants, conducting call campaigns, and creating content for the University’s digital engagement channels.

Bab says the office is looking for students who have come directly from high school or as a transfer student; from Windsor-Essex or from around the globe; those involved in varsity athletics, arts, residence life, co-op, student government, research, or volunteering.

“The bottom line: we’re looking for students who are passionate and love all things UWindsor and are ready to inspire the next generation of Lancers to thrive,” she says.

Students can view the job description through MySuccess, where they will find two job postings under Job Reference #76788 and Job reference #76786. The application is due on Sunday, April 30, and can be sent directly to Achol.Bab@uwindsor.ca.

MBA students contribute to hospital fundraiser

Master of Business Administration students at the Odette School of Business led fundraising efforts within the faculty for Windsor Regional Hospital’s 14th annual Hats on for Healthcare campaign.

The students organized a bake sale and photo booth in the Odette Building lobby to collect donations. Combined with online donations and a contribution from the business school, they raised a total of $2,000 toward the cause.

Hats on for Healthcare is held every March and gives donors the opportunity to wear their favourite hat and share through social media.

This year’s efforts aimed to raise $50,000 for the hospital’s pediatric programs and neo-natal intensive care unit, and surpassed that goal with a final total of $67,491.

Team Odette earned the top fundraising team position and a pizza party provided by the Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation.

Odette MBA Society president Brittany Danelon said supporting Hats on for Healthcare is a tradition for her program.

“We were pleased to be able to continue the tradition again this year. Placing in the top fundraising position and receiving a pizza party was a great bonus,” she said. “We are thankful for the Odette community supporting our efforts!”

Social worker honoured for community service

Social work is a field that is rarely given formal recognition, says Jennifer Cline (BSW 2009), which made her selection to receive a Platinum Jubilee pin especially gratifying.

Cline, a staff social worker with Legal Assistance Windsor, received the honour from Windsor West MP Brian Masse on April 14. The emblem was created to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne; Masse bestowed them on individuals demonstrating “service above self.”

Cline said she was honoured to be considered deserving of such recognition.

“We tend to go into this field out of care for our clients and a sincere belief in the innate value of the work we do,” she said. “Receiving this award was a humbling surprise that will shape my practice and inspire me to continue to advocate passionately—both for my individual clients, and systemically through social justice reform.”

Cline’s 14 years experience in the profession include stints at the Welcome Centre Shelter for Women and the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society prior to joining the LAW staff. Masse cited her responsive and innovative approaches to addressing pandemic-related challenges in selecting her for the award.

plate of food labelled "Feast On"Drawing on the bounty of the county has earned UWindsor Food Services recertification as providing a “taste of Ontario.”

Food Services recognized for commitment to local produce

The University of Windsor’s Food Services has won recertification under the Culinary Tourism Alliance’s Feast On program, which recognizes businesses committed to sourcing and serving Ontario-grown food and drink.

Program co-ordinator Erica Orleni of the Culinary Tourism Alliance expressed thanks to the University for championing local food and beverage.

“We look forward to continuing to celebrate your unique taste of Ontario and sharing your success stories in the coming year,” she said. “Thank you for supporting Ontario’s farmers and artisans!”

The University procures more than a quarter of its food from local sources. Executive chef Paolo Vasapolli credits Windsor-Essex with providing opportunities for relationships with farmers.

“We’re lucky to be located in one of the most fertile regions in Canada,” he says. “We can get the freshest goods while supporting our local economy.”
