Bellemore finished second in the men’s 1000m event and first in the 600m and 4x800m relay along with teammates Taylor McArthur, Joseph Kagumba and Nick MacMackin.

Women claim bronze at provincial basketball tournament

The Lancer women’s basketball team finished third at the Ontario University Athletics final four tournament with a 68-58 defeat of the McMaster Marauders in a bronze-medal match-up Saturday in Ottawa.

Windsor rookie guard Kaylee Anagnostopoulos earned player of the game honours with a gritty defensive performance praised by head coach Chantal Vallée.

“She's going to have to shoot more and develop her skills but what she can do on defence is what keeps her on the floor,” Vallée said. “She's only in first year. Imagine what she’ll be able to do in fourth or fifth year.”

The team’s run of five straight national titles came to an end Friday in a 79-62 loss to the Ryerson Rams in the semi-final round of the provincial championship.

The Lancer men ended their season fourth with losses in both their OUA final four appearances, 96-77 to Ryerson in Friday’s opener and 90-77 to Ottawa in Saturday’s bronze medal consolation.

On Saturday, fifth-year guard Alex Campbell led all scorers with 24 points. OUA Rookie of the Year Isiah Osborne added 20 points, and Mike Rocca finished with 17.

Professor emeritus honoured for charity work

The United Way Windsor-Essex County extended special recognition to UWindsor professor emeritus Datta Pillay during its I Believe in My Community Awards celebration, March 9 at Caesars Windsor.

The charity’s chief executive officer, Lorraine Goddard, called him “a faithful friend and champion,” citing his work as chair of the campus campaign well past his retirement in 1997 and noting that the most recent year saw an increase of 13 percent due to his committee's efforts to recruit new supporters.

Dr. Pillay joined the University’s biology faculty in 1963, served 22 years on its Senate, six years on the Board of Governors, and 10 years as dean of science. He has also been active on the executive of the Windsor University Retirees' Association and held the office of president of the faculty association from 1974 to '75.

Almost 400 guests attended the awards ceremony, honouring workplaces, unions and individuals for outstanding contributions to the community through voluntarism, financial support, and leadership.

“Dr. Pillay is leaving a great legacy, by mentoring others about the work of United Way and how his newly-expanded committee can make the campaign great,” Goddard said. “We could not have done it without his advocacy and commitment to volunteering his time to support the community.”

Co-operative Education Services office relocates

The new location of the office of Co-operative Education Services has several advantages, says executive director Mitch Fields.

Its new home in room 1101, Lambton Tower, is more readily accessible for all students and co-op employers, more visible to passers-by and likely to attract greater foot traffic—increasing awareness of the services offered, Dr. Fields says.

A subsequent move for the Career and Employment Services group from Dillon Hall to the Joyce Entrepreneurship Centre is scheduled for spring or summer 2016. Fields oversees both units as Co-op, Career and Employment Services.
