Student callers extending personal invitations to open house

UWindsor students have been burning up the phone lines to make sure interested high schoolers from across the province receive personal invitations to the University’s November 7 open house.

The event offers tours of campus and its facilities, as well as presentations on academic programs and an information fair on support services. It plays a key role in helping attract enrolment, say organizers, who hope to give visitors a warm welcome.

Wendy Bedard of the student recruitment office says current students are critical to reaching out to prospective students, because they can share their own experiences.

“We need people considering coming to Windsor to speak with our students,” she says. “They have credibility when answering their questions about what to expect in their classes, in their dorms, and in the city.”

Many of the student callers also represented Windsor at the Ontario Universities Fair, and will be on hand to welcome visitors to the open house.

“We have a terrific team of students,” says Bedard. “Being able to offer a familiar face through every stage of contact really helps to communicate with a personal touch.”

Lancer soccer heading into playoff weekend

Lancer men’s and women’s soccer teams are both playing Ontario University Athletics quarter-final contests Sunday, but only the fourth-ranked men’s squad will play at home.

Windsor will host the McMaster Marauders on Alumni Field at 6 p.m. November 1. The Lancers, 12-2-2 over the regular season, earned a bye to the quarter-finals. McMaster defeated Laurier 2-0 Wednesday to advance.

The Lancer women will travel to Waterloo to face the Laurier Golden Hawks in a 1 p.m. start, after a 2-1 overtime victory against McMaster, Wednesday in Hamilton. Cassie Chretien scored both Windsor goals to put her team in the quarter-final round for the first time since 2011.

All other varsity action is also on the road. Waterloo is the setting for the provincial championships in cross country Saturday. Men’s hockey is in Kingston for a pair of games against Royal Military College. Women’s hockey will head north to face off against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs. Men’s and women’s volleyball will take on the Gryphons in Guelph.

computer keyboardInformation Technology Services will launch a new system for tracking requests November 5.

New issue tracking system to empower IT Services clients

A new system for tracking requests to Information Technology Services will allow users to see in real time the progress toward resolving their problems.

Beginning November 5, the new call ticketing system—using software purchased from TeamDynamix—will feature a self-service portal for faculty, staff and students, says Steve Banyai, assistant director of IT Services.

“The self-service portal is easy to use, only a few clicks to create a call ticket, replacing the need to send an e-mail,” he says. “We’ve created quick call ticket links for popular applications like MS Outlook and Blackboard LMS, as well as providing customers with a full service catalogue that will allow you to generate call tickets for any computer, hardware, software, telecommunications or admin account creation or password issues, to name just a few.”

Users will be able to log requests and track the status of all their open calls.

“It puts more control in the hands of the client,” Banyai says.

The new system also incorporates a Knowledge Management Tool to replace the previous FAQ system, which will allow people to resolve issues themselves or give them valuable information about how to use features and functions. A new set of call escalation rules will allow IT Services staff to better manage calls and the time it takes to resolve issues.

Users campus-wide will receive an e-mail Wednesday, November 4, with a link to the self-service portal. While IT Services will eliminate the HelpDesk e-mail account, it will continue to handle requests via the Service Desk Hotline at 519-253-3000, ext. 4440.

Campus ID office provides valuable service, say thankful acting students

Even service areas that students must interact with seldom in their university careers are valuable, says Billy Chandler, president of the drama student society Club SODA. He led a delegation Thursday presenting complimentary theatre tickets to the staff of the UwinCARD office.

“It is easier to show appreciation for those we constantly deal with, but it is important to thank those who make our lives run smoothly, even if we are only lucky enough to see them two or three times in our student careers,” he said. “Their impact on our experience is just as profound as those who we pass every day in other positions.”

The staffers received free admission to the current University Players production, Blithe Spirit. The play’s run continues through November 8 in the Hatch Studio Theatre, Jackman Dramatic Art Centre. Find tickets at www.UniversityPlayers.com or by calling the box office at 519-253-3000, ext. 2808.

Provost Douglas Kneale announced several appointments of academic administrators Thursday.

Katherine Quinsey will take on the position of acting dean of the Faculty of Education, from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017. A professor of English, she has served three terms as head of the Department of English Language, Literature and Creative Writing, and shorter stints as associate dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and acting assistant provost for inter-faculty programs.

Political science professor Lydia Miljan has begun a term as assistant provost for inter-faculty programs, and will continue in the role through June 2017. She will continue to serve as chair of the Arts and Sciences program, which she has since 2008.

Reminder: clocks return to standard time overnight Saturday

DailyNews reminds readers that they can gain an extra hour of sleep this weekend, as Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1. Turn your clocks back one hour.

Of course, if you set your alarm to wake you up at 2 a.m. to reset your clocks, you may have wasted that hour of sleep!
