young students performing on stringed instrumentsRegistration is now open for the fall term of the youth Strings & Flutes program.

Music program to cultivate youth artistry and ensemble skills

The fall term of the Strings & Flute program, which offers group instruction for students ages 4 to 17, will run from Sept. 21, 2024, to late January 2025.

Offered by the Lab School at the School of Creative Arts together with Continuing Education, the program encompasses beginner and intermediate levels in strings — violin, cello, viola, or string bass — and flute. Each group meets every other Saturday in a 60-minute lesson with their peers.

Students at the lab work collaboratively with their peers and instructors to develop their musical and performing skills all of which will culminate in a final student performance on Feb. 1, 2025.

The lab is held in the School of Creative Arts Armories and relies on innovative and proven pedagogies taught by the University’s music professors.

Students love the lab because they enjoy learning in a group context, have opportunities to meet new friends, and appreciate the challenge and excitement that comes with learning how to play an instrument in an ensemble.

Supported by grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Lab School is a centre and laboratory for research. Its work focuses on the students’ social interactions, cultural integration, and overall well-being while engaging in various music activities. Additionally, the research explores the implications of music study on communities and is a collaborative endeavour that engages faculty and students, both undergraduate and graduate.

Through this research, they hope to establish innovative pedagogies in string and flute performance while acquiring a continued understanding of how music can play a role in politics, society, and culture.
