Soccer set to kick off 2024 season

As varsity soccer opens its season this weekend, Lancer coaches are expressing excitement about their teams’ chances.

The Lancers will travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors on Saturday, Aug. 31, before returning to Alumni Stadium for their home openers on Sunday, Sept. 1. The women will play at 2 p.m. and the men at 4:15 p.m. against the Guelph Gryphons.

Daniel Mendonca, head coach of the Windsor women’s team, notes his squad has added 10 players to its roster.

“We have a unique dynamic that has been energetic,” he says. “We are willing to work on the small details and push for perfection.”

Men’s head coach Demetri Vacratsis says his returning players have worked hard in the off-season to reach a higher level of success, and adds new recruits will contribute as well.

“The incoming Lancers, which are a crop of talent, are just as excited and eager to up their game and achieve something fresh and new,” Vacratsis says.

Lancer football, currently ranked sixth in the country by U Sports, will follow up its 25-21 victory last weekend over the Queen’s Gaels by travelling to Ottawa to meet the Carleton Ravens on Aug. 31. Kick-off is at 4 p.m. and the contest will be livestreamed on OUA.tv.
