Lecture to offer look at sport philosophy

A noontime lecture Friday in the Human Kinetics Building will consider three approaches to sport philosophy.

A two-time graduate of the University of Windsor and now a professor in Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Tim Elcombe (BHK 1995, MHK 1998) will deliver “Sport Philosophy in 3D” at noon January 22 in room 145.

He identifies three differing but complementary dimensions:

  • sport metaphilosophy, which debates and develops abstract concepts and methods as potential tools in the melioration of sport practice problems;
  • applied sport philosophy, which tests abstract tools in hypothetical sporting contexts; and
  • sport development tasks, coordinating a range of resources, including philosophical tools, to address problems facing sport practice communities.

A former assistant coach in the Lancer men’s basketball program, Dr. Elcombe researches ethical issues in sport, the intersections of sport and culture, and its use as a socio-political tool. The Faculty of Human Kinetics is sponsoring his Windsor appearance as part of its Distinguished Speakers Series.
