Musical language open to interpretation, says choir director

What do musicians do to distinguish the musical languages of Bach or Biber from those of Brahms, Bartok, Britten, or Binchois?

Ivars Taurins, director of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, will discuss the nature of musical interpretation in a free public presentation, “Performance Practice and the Modern Musician: an approach to style and interpretation,” Wednesday, March 20, at 4 p.m. in the Music Building’s Recital Hall, room 139.

“How do we as interpreters of a legacy of four centuries of music sift through the multitude of possibilities to create something that reflects a particular age and yet at the same time is vital and meaningful to us in the 21st century?” asks Taurins.

Through treatises and other source material, he will explore the rules of thumb of 17th- and 18th-century musical style, bringing Baroque music to life on its own terms and through its own language. His presentation is part of the Take 4 series of free public events.
