A free public event Wednesday, November 7, will discuss the efforts of native leader Tecumseh to secure a place for First Nations during the Anglo-American conflict leading to the War of 1812.

Handwritten newspapers were a common tradition in Finnish popular movements at the end of the 19th century and during the first decades of the 20th century, says Kirsti Salmi-Niklander.

An academy research fellow of folklore studies at the University of Helsinki, she will discuss her research into the history of the popular press in a free public lecture, “Hand-written newspapers as an alternative medium in Finnish and Finnish-Canadian popular movements,” Tuesday, October 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Rose Room, Vanier Hall.

The 1972 movement of Asians expelled by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin was the first test of Canada’s “universal” immigration policy as applied to refugees. Former diplomat Michael Molloy will examine the reasons behind Amin’s decision and the Canadian reaction in a free public lecture Monday, October 15, at 7 p.m. in room 105, Memorial Hall.

Evan Suntres is astute enough to see the irony in the research path he’s chosen.

A master’s student in history, he is studying a phenomenon which he suggests saw conservative males turn to muscle cars as a way of expressing their masculinity in reaction to such social upheavals of the 1960s as the anti-war and women’s liberation movements.

A self-described political moderate, he’s also in the process of restoring his own 1973 Ford Mustang fastback.
