Youth advocates worldwide will share their research on advancing gender equality in education during a webinar Friday, Jan. 31, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
The event is part of “Leading Change,” an international research project led by University of Windsor education professor Catherine Vanner. It highlights the experiences of young activists working to break down barriers in their communities and promote gender-transformative education.
Among the stories to be shared is that of Joan Kembabazi, a Ugandan activist who founded the Gufasha Girls Foundation in honour of her best friend. After her friend died in childbirth at age 13, Kembabazi began going door to door to teach families about the importance of educating girls. She now provides skills training and resources to support young women.
“Gender-transformative education requires everyone in the community and school to take responsibility for breaking barriers,” Kembabazi said.
The webinar will also present findings from the project, which brought together activists from 11 countries to create digital stories that capture their experiences and insights.
