Feminist self-defence course offering resistance strategies

The Wen-Do Women’s Self Defence program offers tools to add to your toolbox of resistance strategies, says instructor Anne Rudzinski.

She will teach the course to women and girls, trans- and cisgender ages 10 years and up, over two Fridays: Oct. 25 and Nov. 1.

“We don’t ever provide a list of do’s and don’ts,” she says. “It’s more about brainstorming options, and reinforcing that we can all trust our gut in dangerous situations.”

The course typically costs $150, but the Office of Sexual Violence Prevention, Resistance, and Support is offering it free on the UWindsor campus to students, staff, and faculty.

Rudzinski says the course will discuss varying scenarios: “workplaces, dating, parties, outdoors, public places, driving, and public transit... We really look at all of the spaces where women might be worried about encountering a threatening person.”

And, she emphasizes, it is suitable for people with a range of abilities.

“We are super adaptable with our strategies,” says Rudzinski. “It’ss about finding what works for your body, how it works right now.”
