All Level CrossFit hosted the second annual John Dufour Classic CrossFit Competition to raise funds to support the Carl and Gloria Morgan scholarship in breast cancer research.
The scholarship fund was started in 2008 as a penny drive by John Dufour, a teacher at St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary School. It turned into an annual campaign he ran after retiring. Since his death in April 2021, his daughter Stephanie Dufour took on the fundraising challenge, with a twist.
“The gym gave me a platform to carry on my dad’s legacy through CrossFit,” says Dufour. “He helped create this scholarship nearly 15 years ago, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to continue to raise money to help students with their future in cancer research.”
The competition involved a total of 42 athletes and more than 20 volunteers. The teams completed four workouts throughout the day.
“Taking over fundraising for the scholarship from my dad has been emotional but incredibly rewarding,” Dufour says.
“Even through retirement, he did whatever he could to stay active in the St. Anne French Immersion community and brainstormed new ways to raise money for breast cancer research.”
The $1,000 scholarship is open to any graduate student with financial need involved in breast cancer research. Since its inception, 32 students have received the award.
