Sarah Sutherland, president of the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII), will present “How the Structure of Primary Law Affects Its Use as Data” in a noon-hour lecture today — Wednesday, March 2.

CanLII is a non-profit organization created and funded by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada; it provides access to court judgments from all Canadian courts.

Sutherland is interested in developing a community vision on how to use legal information and technological solutions in ways that leverage emerging opportunities to build useful tools and improve the ways people work.

Her book, Legal Data and Information in Practice: How Data and the Law Interact, provides readers with an understanding of how to facilitate the acquisition, management, and use of legal data in organizations such as libraries, courts, governments, universities, and start-ups.
