Wanda Thomas Bernard, the senator who won federal recognition of Emancipation Day in Canada, will discuss its potential to be a spark for change for all Black Canadians in a free public address on the Zoom videoconferencing platform Wednesday, Feb. 16.
Dr. Thomas Bernard is the first African Nova Scotian woman in the Senate of Canada and represents the province of Nova Scotia and her hometown of East Preston.
Her presentation will discuss the importance of connecting the roots of anti-Black racism in Canada back to slavery, and reparations as the crucial next step in the fight against systemic anti-Black racism.
