Virtual ceremony to observe raising of Pride flag

Having the Pride flag fly over the UWindsor campus is about more than just putting up a piece of fabric, says Samantha Jones.

The third-year social work major joined the UWindsor Pride Committee this summer, after coming to the realization in the last couple of years that she identified as non-binary. Jones uses she/they/them pronouns.

“First and foremost, the pride flag represents intersectionality and inclusion,” she says. “It’s carving out a space for those under-represented to feel at home in a place we spend so much time.”

The flagpoles outside Chrysler Hall Tower will bear the Progressive Pride flag — a symbol of 2SLGBTQIA+ pride — starting Monday, Aug. 9. The University community is invited to view a livestream of the raising ceremony at 1 p.m. on the Facebook page of the Office of Student Experience.

Jones says the symbolism is important.

“It’s about being represented, not only in the past, but in the present and future too,” she says.

The flag raising will usher in other activities planned by the committee, including the launch of a zine to publish the works of local artists.
