Some memorable milestones in UWindsor history will be celebrated starting Thursday as grads, friends, and supporters return to campus for the annual Alumni Weekend.
The four-day event will kick off September 27 with a grab ’n’ go breakfast for the campus community from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Welcome Centre, followed that evening with the SoCA Soirée at the School of Creative Arts, where students will have a chance to show off both their creative talents and their new classrooms.
On Friday, September 28, University Players will mark its 60th season with a 7 p.m. pre-show alumni reception in the Essex Hall Theatre lobby, followed by a performance of Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play, which uses The Simpsons cartoon series to explore the nature of myth.
Also on Friday, Discover our Layers – An Evening with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the department with a TED talk, appetizers, and live music by Josh Johnson at the Windsor Club, 2072 Riverside Drive East, beginning at 6 p.m.
Two women’s varsity squads will engage in exhibition play — basketball against Trinity Western University at 6 p.m. in the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse and hockey vs. the London Devilettes in the WFCU Centre’s main bowl at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, an interactive tour of the campus will leave from the Welcome Centre at 10 a.m., led by student ambassadors to focus on the newest developments.
Lancer football will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday with a 10 a.m. brunch at the St. Denis Centre, followed by an 11:30 a.m. Alumni Association pre-game barbecue at Alumni Field, and a 1 p.m. game against Toronto Varsity Blues. The first 100 families through the stadium gates starting at noon with receive a bobblehead doll of running back Daryl Stephenson, the program’s latest hall of famer.
Continuing the athletics theme, Lancer hockey alumni will lace up for old times’ sake against a Detroit Red Wings alumni team at 4 p.m. at the Capri Pizzeria Ice Complex, followed by an exhibition game between the current Lancer men’s hockey team and the Guelph Gryphons at 6 p.m. At 5 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre, women’s basketball will hold a rematch against Trinity Western.
Saturday will also bring the School of Dramatic Art’s Family Barbecue and Carnival to the lawn of the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre for food, fun, and performances by alumni aerialists Philip Psutka and Lindsay Bellaire of Theatre Arcturus, as well as Mark Lefebvre and Kyle Sipkens of the Stilt Guys.
The Alumni Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 2018 class with a ceremony Sunday at 1 p.m. in the student centre’s Alumni Auditorium. Get more information at goLancers.ca.
